Aereocalafia’s new 30 passenger plane

E-mail sent today..

Subject: Aereocalafia's new 30 passenger plane

"Dear Friends:

We are proud to announce that we are making history in Loreto today.

The first flight of Aereocalafia’s new 30 passenger plane will be arriving today at 1:00 pm to Loreto and will stay the whole weekend as a probe that our efforts to bring more air lift to Loreto are for real.

So far, we have opened flights from La Paz & Culiacan to Loreto, and soon, flights from Los Cabos and Tijuana with this new 30 passenger plane will be ready!

How exciting is that?

Regards!!!"

Don't know exactly, but it is a propellar driven craft.

That said, I am most likely among a huge number of folks who would like to see more frequent flights and cheaper flights into and from Loreto.

I sadly don't see this as being very significant, Two reasons. First is that it is a relatively small aircraft. Second, Aereo Calafia remains a Mexican domestic carrier. Just thinking that while there are some who are more than happy to do what it takes to get to the Tijuana airport, there remains a huge number of less intrepid folks who just might visit Loreto if it was convenient and affordable.

Right now, the Alaska/ Horizon duopoly is IT.

Over time, I've wondered about the investment of the Villa Group and what investment they might make ensuring a stream of prospective buyers, such as subsidizing flights.

"What kind of aircraft is it?"

An Embraer 120 Brasilia 30 seat turboprop. Good looking aircraft!

Looks like service with start later this month from TJ..two days a week..

http://www.aereocalafia.com.mx/index.php?section=index

Flights look to be going for $170 each way

Loreto is hurting for flight options... Hoping this service can be expanded:cool:

If anyone is on it or there to see it land... Zeta Newspaper: "Loreto Is Abandoned"

What is going on down there?! http://www.zetatijuana.com/2011/09/24/loreto-en-el-abandono/ (09/24/2011)

Excerpt: "What do you think about attempts by the mayor and the governor to attract tourism to Loreto? Are they working?

"I think it's the only positive note of this moment, we have seen lately that the federal government, state and municipal levels, along with civil society and entrepreneurs are making a great effort directed in the same direction. They are already talking about the rescue and revival of revival. See if it's true. I see the intention of the governor and the mayor to straighten the wheel. I think we've hit bottom, and right now it's time to sit down and land planning projects before we can fall into another crisis, because it will happen one day or another and we must have the courage and the strength to move forward. "

"The 600 hotel rooms in this town are empty due to the loss of airline connectivity between Loreto and the domestic and foreign markets. Flights that were from Houston and Los Angeles have disappeared and Alaska Airlines only has one arrival per month. Nor are there any flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara or Tijuana. More than 30 restaurants have closed and the lack of working capital is notorious.

Loreto, Baja California Sur .- "The food is ready, sir," said an employee of restaurateur Domingo Perez, who with a face of anger and impatience moves his fingers on the table and gives a measured encouragement: "Let's see how things go today, because I do not know where the customers have gone to lately, even as we cook great food, they just don't come anymore. "

It is just over 1PM in the afternoon on August 27 and the heat flashes hit everyone the same without mercy: children, youths, elderly, taxi drivers, workers of all kinds roam the downtown area, hoping to find some tourist who wants to have fun.

Faces wet with sweat, everyone tries to take shelter in the shadow of the trees or houses. The question that everyone has is: Where are the tourists?

In this climate, the heat is the least important thing for Domingo Perez. From 2008 to date, the crisis has hit as never before in Loreto, and especially among service providers who have witnessed how, little by little, business have closed and sadly the streets that were once traveled by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists are now vacant.

In this town, which was considered a tourism powerhouse, the landscape has changed lately as well as the perception. Of the 56 food and beverage establishments that were in the town, from snack bars to international restaurants, 30 had to close their doors.

In addition to this, the fiscal mismanagement led by the former PRD mayor, Yuan Yee Cunningham, who after completing his term ran out of Loreto in face of popular rejection and the fear of criminal charges against him for embezzlement of public funds, was the coup de gras. Some retailers survived on the working capital provided by the bureaucrats, who in the final stages of the administration were not paid their salaries, and therefore there was no money even for "a cup of coffee".

Dining in Loreto

In late August, my son and I went on a fishing trip to Loreto. This was the week of that freak wind storm -- remember? Anyway, we decided not to go back because of: NO GOOD PLACES TO EAT! We went fishing for two days, and, while the fishing was good, we could not find a good place to eat in the whole friggen town! We walked and walked and walked and asked locals and both times ended up going to that same restaurant with the oversized palapa roof and the endless "smoking logs on the fire" on the main drag -- do not remember the name, but it was so-so. No one else was open -- no taquerias on the street, NADA! Even tried that "gourmet pizza" joint but should have saved my money.

Capt. Mike. We did walk around -- on the malecon and on the side streets and we did ask locals. This was around 6 P.M. Nothing was open!! I think cause tourism was down (August heat?) restaurants and street stands closed due to lack of customers. Our first time to Loreto, but I must say it did not entice us to want to come back and all because of no good places to eat!

Dining in Loreto has issues in Aug - September.. Alot of places will close down for the heat and give their workers the time-off due to lack of tourist activity.
Augies is always open, and will cook up your fish if requested, as will Domingo's Place (Old El Nido)..
It only gets better as October comes, and more resturants open up...

I live in Loreto full time and can count at least five (5) restaurants along the Malecon that are open 6 days a week. Along with several others in the middle of Loreto that have wonderful Mexican food and will also prepare your "DAILY" catch for a minimum...Its the "negativity" that we don't need in this small town, so if your not satisfied visiting two weeks out of the year, please don't return. We all love this place, although it does get hot during Aug & Sep and a few restaurants close. La Palapa Restaurant is also owned by Domingo, as well as Domingo's Place (Ex El-Nito)..Both, of these places serve wonderful meals and are liked by everyone. Also, with two new restaurants at the Golf Course that are open during the summer months, you don't have to stay in town any longer..

I dunno...when I worked in the food/beverage/entertainment business we welcomed feedback -- good, bad or indifferent. We didn't tell a dissatisfied customer "...please don't return.".
