Swimming in January in the North
Hello All:
I made my first trip from LA to Mulege in 1998 and camped along the way. I remember being windy and cold despite my youthful enthusiasm.
I want to go back this January but this time I want to find a good, isolated beach to swim on. Some people say around San Felipe will be warmer that
time of year.
I would appreciate your thoughts on any beaches that might be warm enough for swimming. North is great. If not in the North, feel free to give me
other ideas. I have two weeks so I just need to be able to drive there and back in either my station wagon with camping or borrowed RV.

It could be cold. The farther south you go the warmer the water. You can make the tip and back very easily in two days (Some will say 3).
You can get to most beaches with a station wagon if you take your time. The wind will be your biggest issue that time of year, it can be and is often
very windy. When LA gets the Santa Ana winds so does Baja X2 or X3. Bahia Ascuncion or La Bocana would be nice to stay at and there are lots of open
beaches near by. Shoot me a u2u if you would like some beach camping ideas. I try to keep remote beaches off this radar. U2U is the upper right hand
side.

It depends on what temp you consider warm, to
me in Jan. ANYWHERE in Baja the Ocean temp is
less than warm, even at the end of the Peninsula.
San Felipe in Jan., would typically have 14 mi. an
hour plus wind in afternoon, sea temp 65 ish.
to me, warm winters in Mex start at Puerta Vallarta
and south from there

I figured you might say that about water temperature. Cabo Pulmo area even chilly for swimming? That was my extreme backup if the rest of Baja was
too cold water-wise. Thanks for the ideas.

You can swim at Cabo Pulmo in January no problema. Water should be in the low 70's. Why not invest in a short sleeve wetsuit (springsuit) for your
trip? Then you can stay in longer. It can be windy for a few days, followed by a few days of relative calm that time of year. All of the west coast
will be cold. I would bet that around La Paz the temps would be close to Cabo Pulmo. Go and have some fun.
No b-tchin\' in the Baja.

San Felipe and the upper gulf has awesome WARM water IN THE SUMMER (85º+). However, it is VERY COLD in the winter.

Go South, to La Paz or further. January water temps in the SOC near La Paz will be right around 70F. A wetsuit, or a shorty, makes the water
comfortable for a much longer time.

I live in San Felipe part time and live on the beach and I will tell you, it is COLD
Granted I am a wimp being from Phoenix and if I came in from Canada or the cold north I may think it is wonderful.
Winter mornings and nights are very cold but the days can warm up and be nice, probably 65 to 75, however, the sea, no way unless you have a wet
suite. My records show the upper 50's in the coldest months during Dec and Jan.
But, a nice fire on the beach and a great view is still worth the time and energy to "come on down"

all you wet blankets. they cut holes in the ice to take a dip up there in the winter. he'll prolly think it's paradise!

If you want warm water in winter head to the mainland.
