Shots fired at California border checkpoint [San Ysidro, CA]
(CNN) -- A Customs and Border Protection officer was involved in a shooting at the San Ysidro port of entry, in the area used to process pedestrians
crossing the Mexican border into the United States, an official with the agency said Thursday.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. (8 p.m. ET), according to CNN San Diego affiliate KFMB.
Video provided by the station showed two people being taken to a local hospital for treatment of wounds.
Information about who else was involved in the shooting, and the number of people injured, was not immediately available.
Processing of northbound pedestrian travelers at San Ysidro has been temporarily suspended, said CBP Public Affairs Liaison Angelica De Cima, but
officials hope to resume processing soon.

Officer-involved shooting at US-Mexico border

SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say a border officer shot and wounded a person at a San Diego border checkpoint.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency spokeswoman Jackie Wasiluk says the shooting happened Thursday afternoon at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, in
the area used to process pedestrians crossing the border into the United States.
In a statement, Wasiluk says the agency has temporarily suspended processing northbound pedestrian travelers at the checkpoint, but hopes to resume
processing soon.
It was unclear what led to the shooting.
A Fire Department spokesman says the person shot was not an officer, and was taken to a trauma center for treatment. Two other people suffered bumps
and bruises in the fray.
The nationalities of the injured were not immediately known.

Seems to me that there a lot of grumpy people working the border. I think the job makes them grumpy. I would be bored stiff doing the same simple task
over and over again every day. It doesn't really take much thought or effort of any kind and the working conditions are far from pleasant. I wonder
what the turnover is.
But, this incident broke the tedium.
Two border officers shot and wounded a man at the nation's busiest border crossing Thursday after the man grew nervous under questioning, ran away
and fired a starter pistol pulled from his waistband, authorities said.

The morning news on this is a mess. They state the guy pulled a gun-replica....which, I suppose, qualifies him to be a target. Didn't say anything
about firing a starter pistol.

Gun replica??? Starter pistol??? Who ever the  shootee is, has got to be a
complete FOOL, or a total marooon, especially if he was waving it around in front of an armed law enforcement official.

Kinda like my former husband who, when asked by the US agent his purpose of visiting Mexico answered, "I was buying drugs." (He had
been to a rheumatologist in Los Algodones) The poor agent rolled his eyes and was obligated to send us to secondary for a thorough search of our rv.

Broader Border issues
I have been crossing the border between Baja/Mexico and California/Arizona since 1962. I have found the CBP/Customs personnel manning the border
inspection booths to be professional and for the most part, courteous.
I would imagine sitting in that booth all day, breathing exhaust fumes, interacting with the traveling public could be somewhat frustrating. Hours and
hours of boredom, interspersed with moments of real excitement.
Before you pass judgement on someone doing a job you don't understand, you need to walk a few miles in their shoes.
In my professional career, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to enlighten members of the community on what the job of law enforcement
really entails.....almost to a person, the civilians responded that they would have taken harsher actions against the offender and wondered why the
police put up with so much crap........I'm just saying that you maybe need to reevaluate your attitudes and comments regarding the CBP personnel
unless you really know what it is they do............
Maybe your attitude and or comments are the reasons you have trouble with the CBP.............Your mileage may vary. remember, they hire from the same
gene pool as everybody else.
As to the information of the individual pointing a gun, real, toy or starter pistol at an armed law enforcement officer............never bring a knife
(or a toy gun) to a gunfight.
Just my 2 cents worth...............

Sorry Terry, but some of these guy's attitudes are intolerable and if they can't handle the front lines, they shouldn't be on them. Besides, they
applied for the job knowing what it entailed.
No excuse for rudeness under power and an earned reputation for cordiality would go a long way toward making the crossing experience more tolerable
for everybody.
If they think they're having a bad day, how do they think everybody else is doing?
It's their job to realize this and act accordingly, but I've seen atrocious behavior come out of these people at times and one bad one will make all
of them look bad.
Ya know....there are occasions when this is the first exposure to America some people will get? From all they've heard, "Wonderful America
blahblahblah", it must be a large disappointment.
That's a shame.

I have lived on or near the border all my life. Had many neighbors who were border patrol and friends.
Since the inception of the Patriot act and the indiscriminate hiring of anyone, including felons, to "protect" our borders I am seeing that this is
not what I once pridefully called U.S. Border Patrol.
Many of the "old" BP have retired in disgust after the inception of Homeland Security, disagreeing with their policies.

I do not know you and I hope we are able to meet at some point, I have enjoyed your posts.
Consider though your tag line of "Do not wish ill for your enemy, plan for it" as being the motto of the "new" CBP agents.
When pulling into an illegal stop on Hwy 8 in Arizona and hearing "Here comes so-and-so again, do you want me to flock with him put's me off their
whole program.

Gentleman and Scholars All!
In the past 48 hour here in Amarillo, we have had 2 Police Shooting Deaths of three People. All involved in someone indicating they had a Gun are
making a move as if to shoot at an Officer.
Nowdays with so many Lousy Lawyers and Govt Controls it makes it difficult to find good Officers. Is it any wonder that in dealing with some of the
Scum coming across the Border that more people have not been shot?
In a way it is a Reflection of our Societies Mores and Standards{Which in my opinion are very Low} developed or undevoloped in the Past 20 years.

My wife always gets aggrevated with me when I say this, but anybody that deals face to face with human beings day after day, shift after shift learns
to hate every person on the planet in a hot hurry.
I was only treated poorly once when crossing Nbound. Trying not to be sexist, but it was a female officer, and I surmise it had something to do with
the calendar.
If you don't believe me try directing traffic at an accident scene sometime. Your love for mankind will disappear quite quickly and your politically
correct language, race and religious tolerance goes out the window fast.
I do agree with bajaguy.
