Lobster fishermen start work today!
The last couple weeks have been busy for lobster fishermen as they have to make all their own traps. Yesterday the roads of Asuncion were busy with
pick ups delivering traps to the beaches and today was a huge day as the boats were all put in the water, traps loaded on, bait cut and I have been
watching them zooming around to set traps all morning.
Here is one team at Ensenadita getting ready to go out.
There is always a feeling of happy anticipation on this day every year as the fishermen are glad to get back to work after some lean months off. the
sea lions seem excited too looking forward to some free lunches they get when they crush the traps and spring the bait...at the moment they are using
bonita.
Fishermen are saying that even the sport fishing benefits as fish love to congregate around the freshly baited traps so more fish come in closer to
shore.

Same here today, altho they just get to set the traps and go out tomorrow to bait them.Lets hope for a good season for the hard working men and women
!

Heads up while boating around these traps. 3 or 4 years ago a buddy and I were camped at San Roque, fished with Juan the first day and then took our
own boat out the next day, with out Juan. While rounding the kelp beds at San Roque I gave what I thought was a wide birth, a few hundred yards, to
the buoys marking the traps but the current was so strong the rope from the buoy to the trap must of had a lot of slack and at 25mph my lower end unit
snagged the rope! Worse thing was we both spilled a fresh beer.
Next day we gave it a quarter mile.

the launch ramp was a busy place yesterday with lobster traps being loaded onto pangas all day AND sardines being unloaded from pangas to use as bait.
Just a note to those who bring their own boats here...becaust this launch site belongs to the coop, one must wait until they are finished with their
commercial activities before launching your boat. There have been some problems with gringos trying to launch when the pangas are trying to get out in
the early morning....be best to respect their work and wait your turn.

Good advice Shari! These guys are out to make a living. We are out for fun. Also, a little respect for the locals at the ramps, and on the water, goes
a long ways towards a harmonious existence. Advice or help is much more freely given once they get to know you.
I also never shadow the commercial guys and local sportfish pangas. I'll fish the general area and give them plenty of room!!
Is the season open down this far south? Need to drive over to Punto Canejo for some fresh tails if it is. I only have 2 real scrawny tails left in the
freezer!
