U.S. Passport requirement

A woman-friend wants to ride down with me and return by air. Her passport is expired and she does not want to have to go to the expense to renew it for the one trip. Also, time may not permit without the added expense of expediting. My question is: the expired passport is proof of citizenship. Does it have to be current?

Have her use the expired passport, Tony. It'll work just fine. Tell her to be humble and confused just to make things easier.

I'm pretty sure you have to have a valid current passport to get on a plane back to the US of A.

Fact is that the airlines are tougher than the guys on the ground at the border. They are very unlikely to make an exception, as they could get get fined.

One other matter is that without a current passport, your friend will not be able to obtain the FMM entering. Obviously, as you are headed to Mulege, the FMM is required. Or does she possess a still current one? Ditto with the airlines. You must surrender a current FMM to board.

Doesn't seem to be a pleasant prospect to have that black cloud over her head worrying about whether she'll be allowed to board a flight with an expired passport.

You might attempt calling her prospective airline. Another thought is that you can get same day passport service at any of the designated federal buildings.

Or....how's she feel about taking the bus back to TJ and throwing herself on the mercy of the agents there?

toners I would NOT have her chance not being able to fly and I can almost guarantee she will not be able to .... Les couldn't fly to Europe unless his passport had at least 6 months on it ... I realize Baja is not Europe but hey.... to not be able to get home would be a nightmare....

she can apply for the passport card - probably faster ? I know it is less expensive ....

goodluck !

Passport Card only good for land or sea travel????? :?:

From US State Dept. site

Why can’t I use the passport card to fly to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Bermuda?

The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by land. The passport book is the only document approved for international travel by air

Passport card won't work. They're only good at land borders. She will definitely need a passport book.

We jump around a little here and there.....I would certainly have that passport updated BEFORE heading down there.

Not true. Thousands of U.S. citizens travel to Mexico every day without a passport.

No way!

IMO, there is no way any airline in Loreto and especially Horizen will let anyone board with an expired passport.

You are talkng manzanas and naranjas between going into the USA with an airline or crossing in a car.

I'm guessing that Dave meant just that. Land travel v. air travel. He was talking about land travel playing semantic games with C-Urchin.

I know that someone got their pass port stolen in San Felipe and had no copy of it. When they were injured and wanting to get back to El Centro it was a hassle. I do not know the people but was told this. They were elderly. Nancy

By land, birth certificate and photo ID is still working just fine... They cannot keep Americans out of their own country... but a passport will speed things up!

By air, not the same at all... Perhaps just fly between Tijuana and Loreto and use land trasport to cross the border? Otherwise, get the passport and be done with it.

She can fly out of Loreto on AeroCalifia to TJ without a passport or FMM (Domestic flight).. Then walk accross the border with her expired passport..
