NEED HELP FROM PUNTA CHIVATO PEOPLE

Pleasse help if you can.

Many years ago a Twin Engine Cessna Aircraft took off the Runway at Punto Chivato crashed in about 25 feet of water and Mud off of the end of the runway.

It was visable for several years and then disappeared, I think in the Mud on the Bottom.

I would appreciate very much if anyone in the area knows whether or not it is still there or has been removed.

thanks for any help. Skeet/Loreto

Thanks Guys:
Yes it happened before 1970 as I went in with Vaughn Lamb and pulled out a Cessna 210 that had a Landing problem. Took the wings off and trailered it out across the Sea to Guyumas That was when you could clearly see the Airplane ,.

Will hope Pompano saw this and remembers.

Hola Skeet,

Sure, I recall a lot of cantina and campfire talks about a twin crashing...with some contraband aboard as the legend goes. I think it was just that..a legend that got re-told often and grew more fantastic as time passed. Or it could have not been a twin Cessna at all, but maybe was the DC-3 that ditched near Pt. Conception... with a load of hay or something....

I dove and snorkled about every lineal foot of the shorelines and 1/4 mile offshore of Chivato from the old fish camp to Somebrero Hill and clear up to San Bruno. I saw a lot of debris, sunk boats, and found some interesting artifacts...but never saw any sign of any planes..let alone a twin Cessna. Of course, that's not to say that it's NOT THERE. Most legends have some basis in fact.

I do know that IF I ever did find any...say gold ...on any wreck about 1000 yards straight out from the old runway, I would never talk about it. ;D

Just kidding, Skeet.....maybe. Baja is full of legends. :saint:

Pomp;

I have seen the Twin Cessna in about 25 fwwt of Water about 1,000 Feet off the Runway.

I do somely and Sincerely state the following.

In 1968 I hired Vaughn Lamb, an Aircraft Recoverer to to to Chavato and bring back a Cessna 210 which had made a hard landing and had some damage.
We went across on the Ferry , took off the Wings , put them and the Fuselege on the Trailer and brought it back to the States.
While there we heard about the Twin out in the water so we took a boat and went out and Vaughn Lamb looked at it from the top of the Water to see it it would be worth another Trip. He said "No'.
One of the mexicano guys in the boat told us that the Plane was suppose to have some Gold on Board, but Divers had removed it.

I never did hear from anyone about the removal and just figured the Mud had finally covered it all over.

If you hear anything I would appreciate it.

if it IS there the way to find it is to hire Mick from Mulege divers to go where it is and find it. he is a pro with rescue and salvage credentials over the world. Simple sonar or metal detection equip will have it if it is there even covered.
or probe with a long stick.... ;^)

Guys, that very shallow area is now so populated with homes and daily swimmers, divers, and boating sightseers, that even a dropped fillet knife would have been found by now.

But then...hmmm, I wonder? The wreck just found off the coast of England with the millions in silver. You just never know, do you...?

Well heck, I might detour over that way on my next fishing trip to Tortuga. I did see something shiny the last time thru there....could it be...?

Skeet...I will ask the guys soon and get back to you here.

The hillside casa above mi old casa belonged to my amigo, Jake..who was the solo owner and builder for many years. And...He was indeed that retired fireman.

Sadly, Jake passed away a few years ago. We had some times!

It now belongs to his good friend, Steve, who continues the tradition of hospitality and friendship.

RIP, JAKE...a Real Baja Character.

Thnaks for all the Info. The photos are real Good and do bring back some memories.

Pomp I don't know if you ever ran across a Little Woman by the Name of Audrey, She was a SailBoater that lived over at Punta Arena for a number of years. Would take her Sailboard all over Conception.
Any way if you did know her she is nearly 80 years old and still going Strong!! She is on our email and we hear from her often. She really had some stories to tell about the things she ran across while Sailboarding around conception.

I first met her when she was 7 Months preg, with her Son. We were on the Natl. Ski patrol out of Fresno. What a Gal!!

Yes, I believe this is the same 'not even old' woman that I met at Pta Arena years ago...and who I 'think' may be a windsurfing pal of Claudia's (La Tienda in Mulege). Nowadays that windy point is called Playa Naranjos, though. Things change too dang fast around here. Now we have beach names coming out our ears...

Can't really be THAT many 80yr olds out there windsurfing...but hey, if you eat and drink right like me, one be active forever. ;)

Sounds like the same "Audry" that was married? to a guy I bought a motor home from about 20 years ago. Had a place at Arena, then moved to Naranjas ? when it opened. Then heard they split up quite a few years ago. :?:

Thats Her Lou;

I first knew her in Fresno when I was going to School and working on the natl Ski patrol at China peak. She married a guy named Erdman and moved to Los Banos, Several years later I met her again in Los Banos, she had a 18 Yr. Old Son and was divorcing Erdman. She went over and started living on the Beach at Santa Crus and Wind Surfing. I lost Track and ran into years later living in a Palapa and motor Home with a guy at Arena and later naranja.

What a Gal.
After Virginia and i left Loreto she came by in her Toyota Motorhome. She had been traveling all over the States. Then she headed over Seas for several years.

What a Gal!! and she is still going Strong.

I believe there were two ladies. The name of the one not mentioned in the posts is Ramona. She would be about 80 now. I met her and her husband when i last camped (next to them) at Playa Punta Arena in April of 2001, she was 70 or so then. She and her husband set up a travel trailer on their 'lot' that they moved in from Claudias property (summer storage) every year. Ramona and her husband lived in La Pine oregon. I lost track of them, but remember her being out on the water no less than 4 hrs at a stretch on her sailboard. Truly an inspiration. Turns out in her early years she played cards with my best friends mother in NE Portland, Oregon (in the 50's). small world.

The folks to ask for assistance would be resident divers Ed & Beth of San Bruno.
