That article was written by Hamilton Nolan. Here is his actual picture:

He's just another jerk-off with a computer. You really know how to pick reliable sources for your news references.

We have another thread on "BN" about the new owner of the SDUT.

I mocked the new owner too because he is well known as a big homophobic who supported prop 8. This so-called right-wing family values republican dumped his wife for a younger women. Talk about hypocrisy.

Here is the other link:

Here you go. Just in case you're not Catholic Durrellrobert. It's against the Catholic church's Canon law that you divorce your wife of 43 years in order to hook up with a hot young Russian woman.

Major Prop 8 Donor Doug Manchester Dumps His wife By Logan Murphy

From San Diego CityBeat:

In July 2008, hotelier and developer Doug Manchester donated $125,000 to help gather signatures for a proposition that would ban same-sex marriage in California. The early money was crucial to getting the initiative—which ultimately passed—on the ballot. At the time, he told The New York Times that he made the donation because of “my Catholic faith and longtime affiliation with the Catholic Church,” which preferred that marriage remain between a man and a woman. Indeed, the Catholic Church has vehemently opposed gay marriage. Then again, it’s also not too keen on divorce.

On Oct. 9, 2008, Manchester ended 43 years, eight months and nine days of marriage to Elizabeth Manchester by moving out of their La Jolla abode. The couple spent the next several months trying to reach a quiet settlement on how best to distribute millions of dollars in cash and other assets. In July, those talks totally broke down, and Doug started playing financial hardball with Elizabeth, allegedly draining the couple’s shared accounts and stealing her mail. On Aug. 6, Elizabeth filed a petition for redress in family court. All of the information in this story comes from those petitions. CityBeat contacted attorneys for both parties, but neither returned calls by press time.

This ardent defender of traditional marriage didn't just try to cover his buns in the divorce, he downright abused his wife of 43+ years:

In March, Doug told Elizabeth he’d no longer maintain the bank account the two shared to pay her expenses, and that she should submit her bills to his office. She followed this procedure, but was surprised to get a call from AT&T saying her bill was past due.

“Doug began dragging his feet on paying my expenses,” she writes, “refusing to pay certain expenses until I accepted his demands regarding our property division. I believe Doug did this to squeeze me financially.” Read on...

Now THAT, my friends, is what real, heterosexual, traditional marriage is all about! Snark/ You gotta love those GOP family values...

OK, so all of that is true but that doesn't prove that he is homophobic, unless you believe that all 7 million + people (which was about an equal mix of Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives, Catholics and other religions) that voted for Prop 8 are all homophobic.

"The man is a megalomaniac who thinks the rules are not for him."

And he thinks San Diego is his - that he can be the King of all the Domain. That he can take his mediocre cheap development ideas and wheel and deal with the Navy as in olden times and do what he likes - all to his ultimate benefit - of course. He will use the UT, its staff, the property to his benefit - he will quash public opinion, skew politics, and further his agendas - whatever they might be. San Diego is weak in many ways - a hick town - and he will take advantage of that. The city will suffer for lack of information. Let's calendar this thread for a year and see.

Dave, You Are Saying

That the writer didn't sufficiently report about how bad the situation and future is at the SD U-T?

durrelllrobert...you have hit the nail on the head.
A democrat friend rants and raves about the raping of the country by Walmart and the killing off of the poor, children and elderly by the repubs who support corrupt big corporations such as that.
Funny thing is...the parking lot is always packed in everyone I drive by. No Dems in that mix?
Dougs hotels are still visited by all sides of the aisle. Get real.
And Joejustjoe, I remind myself how not-so-superior I am to those I read about or observe (hard to though with your selfrightousness) by remembering a long look at myself in a mirror and penning this thought to my Pastor:
"It doesn't bother me that I sit next to a hypocrite in my church, it bothers me that they sit next to one".
Keep the lights of Joe...you may not like who you see, sitting there alone.

manchester has found a port district that will allow him to wall off the waterfront with a string of highrises and convention centers. he is milking it for all it's worth to him, and the citizens are too dumb to care.

SAN citizens have reacted too late. in the 1970s SAN could have developed a waterfront like chicago -- wide park space. now we got line of high rise chain hotels and warehouse space (i.e. convention center) along the water and no park space downtown.

the county admin center should be sold off to devlopers shortly, wonder what ugliness will be built there? don't believe the county when they say "park." they will find a reason to change their mind and sell it to manchester or some other developer.

america's ugliest downtown waterfront!

and the crowning indignation will be the wings statue on waterfront... ugh!

It's all in the eyes of the beholder, Goat. As a 30 year resident of San Diego (Coronado, actually) I think the San Diego waterfront IS beautiful, certainly more beautiful than it was when I lived there (left in 1968). And, San Diego has one of the most beautiful and largest "Parks" in the world----BALBOA PARK----right smack in the middle of the downtown city. San Diego is a jewel, in my eyes.

Me thinks you protest too much.
