Gordo Banks Under Attack By Outsiders
• Greedy long Range boat from San Diego
A long range sport boat out of San Diego anchored off both the inner Gordo Banks and outer Gordo Banks for three days on November 30th and December
1st and 2nd. With a bait tank holding over 3000 bait fish and 25 anglers on board, they were able to catch a boat load of fish. A full report can be
viewed on the Intrepid's web site, although the captain never mentions the Gordo Banks in his report, but does say they caught over 50 yellow fin
tuna.
Local fishermen feel their turf was poached and over fished by the outsiders, and they were offended by and impacted by the over-harvest of tuna and
other species that the local panga operators depend on for their living.

Yellowfin tuna are a pelagic species that are constantly on the move......
just exactly how do you deprive the local pangeros of schooling, migrating tuna???

Anyone notice that when reading the GG. in David's article, it states that AirTran, division of Southwest will be operating a daily flight starting in
May, from John Wayne (Orange County) to Cabo!
Inasmuch as Southwest and AirTran have always been discounters, it would seem to me that this will be a real boon to Cabo tourism.

"Poaching" tuna? What constituted poaching?
Pretty sure that the Intrepid anglers would be allowed 25anglers x 5tuna per day x 3 days max for a total legal haul of 375 tuna.

Couple other things I found out.
The Intrepid baited up those pangeros to help 'em out.
There wasn't 25 anglers
Every person on the boat had a Mexican Fishing Permit (Bought and paid for)
The writer was not on the water.
Purely slanderous article.

hola, had I had been at my folk's house (punta gordo),I would have upset, I know the long range boat's are welomed/toleraterd on the pacific side
such cedros and the uncle sam bank, and that the boat fishing on the bank's is not welcomed or wanted,that is considerd prety much by all to be inside
baja domain,,this the first time that has happend that I know of and I hope the last,,they a long range vessel /great food/captain & deckhands are
top notch and 'I m very surprised to hear that story,, I guess the fishing in
the pacific must be SLOW....tick...tock..leaving for work.....out.. keith & lil tasha

would not be surprised in locals viewed long range gringo sport fishing boats negatively.
in most parts of world, locals often see foreign fishermen as infringing on their turf and taking "their fish."
the fees paid by gringos probably are not evident at local level. do those license fees get spent locally? and if so, is the spending made public
knowledge?
many long range boats don't stop in local ports to gas up and take supplies and eat at the local restaurants, solocals probably do not see economic
benefit of local spending by visitors.
for locals, perhaps they see no economic benefit and see only taking of their fish.
imagine the reverse scenario of mexican sport boats fishing off of la jolla or carlsbad or dana point,... gringos would go ape poop crazy at such a
sight!

I doubt they would. They don't even give a second thought that Mexicans use the area to bypass Ellis Island so why would they care if they're
catching a few crummy fish?

Exactly! and that isn't even one trawl for the purse seiners that blanket the area.

My sentiments exactly! I stopped reading the GG years ago because they try desperately to create stories rather than simply report them. Every issue
seems to try to stir controversy over something just to increase circulation.
I admit I am part of the problem. If I stopped using them to wrap fish and line bird cages they might realize how few people actually read that rag

Maybe some of you need to get over it.
Fact is that Carrie Duncan started this rag as an advertiser. Free copies are in abundance all over the Los Cabos area in newsracks.
I'm not sure if any of the real stories they printed were by accident, but I somehow doubt it since Carrie has been deported from Mexico at least
once.
That brings me to the Gringo Gazette Northern Edition, that was headed by Nancy Conroy.
As we all know, that paper is history, as is Nancy, as far as being in Baja.
Since I have visited Cabo for many years predating the original edition of the Gringo Gazette, I have a feel for what they endeavored to do when they
started.
Even though Carrie did get deported once for running articles that made certain local officials uncomfortable, all along, the tone of this publication
was on the humorous side.
When Carrie partnered with Nancy to do a Northern edition, I'm not so sure that they had a complete understanding of what it was to be the Gringo
Gazette.
Not to diss Nancy, but her Northern edition became way less humorless, and way more crusading against the Mexican culture than Carrie ever envisioned.
Nancy is gone from Baja. The GG Northern edition does not exist. But Carrie continues.
Knowing Carrie, I can only share that she has always been crotchety. Difficult to deal with, but, she continues.
So, Mengano, or whomever, if you feel like tearing my analysis apart, no problema.
