car rental in La Paz

Although we have driven Baja many times, 4 of us are flying into La Paz to go to a house in Loreto for a week in April. Although we can go into town to get the bus, we thought it might be more convenient to rent a car. Prices seem cheap but with "Third Person Liability" (TPL), prices almost double. Almost no one quotes TPL up front. Any comments?

I've rented cars in Baja for almost three decades. As far as I know, the rental prices include the required third party liability coverage (financial responsibility).

What has usually been the big increase to rates has been the comp/ coll on the vehicle you are driving.

I have to admit that I do not know exactly what it is that you are referring to. Since, just like in the States, the rental rate includes liability insurance for the driver.

What agencies have you checked with? The big, international ones? Or fly by night locals?

I need to do a little more research then. Alamo gives a $207 rate for a VW Jetta which I thought was pretty good, then I get a $508 rate for a VW Jetta from this Wolf Management (out of Los Barriles) which "includes TPL which is mandatory for all drivers in Mexico"). Once I get this figured out, I'll post some answers for all.

You should check and see if there is an Avis in La Paz. When I fly into Cabo, I have found that Avis is the only company to include the mandatory insurance in their quote. It may have changed, but was still in effect last April. Good luck!
