SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – California drivers will have to follow a number of new traffic laws in 2012 that range from stricter DUI punishment laws to
dictating new seating arrangements for older children.
The California Highway Patrol said motorists should be aware that changes to child safety laws passed by California lawmakers in 2011 require children
under the age of eight and shorter than 4’9” to ride in a car seat or booster seat. The law also requires children to sit in the back seat unless
there are no available safe seats.
Drivers caught breaking the booster seat law can face fines starting at $475.
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

I predict this is another "Nanny Party" law. How will they limit our freedoms next, thinking parents don`t know better? The laws (children in car
seats) are strict in Maine and Washington but I think it`s weather related.
Desert Protection Act, MLPA`s, more legal theft of our money, can`t own a bar and let people smoke, things are hopeless and changeless! Which party
is the "Nanny" party? You decide.

Kids Costing in Cal ?
I've often (too often ?) said that "There's a lot to be said for Kids. Unfortunately, MOST of it's Bad".
The California Nannys have added another.
Thankfully, any Kids (Grandkids) we might have reason to have in the car or trucks are in Virginia, Kentucky or the Philippines so it's a problem for
others.
Unfortunately, there are more than enough other Moonbeam Nanny-Laws that we do get to share in.

This tidal wave will soon wash out. Way toooo many no-it-alls telling us how to fart towards the north, or south, soon we'll need a permit to fart.
There are already many laws regarding child saftey, and all are good and benifit children. This new law seems over the top, who knows, maybe some
child saftey seat lobbyist has infiltrated Jerry Browns inner circle, shocking. The beauty of mexico is that stupitity is punished, kind of creates
its own inteligence.....

However, thanks to the strong dentist and school bus lobby, California school buses are not required to have any seat belt or restraining system at
all. In case of a sudden stop, the children will use the round metal bar atop the seat in front of them to stop their forward progress.

And not only that............... I can just see the CHP guys pulling out their tape measures, then pulling out children to measure thier height, then
sticking some poor slob with a $500 fine because their child was only 4' 8 1/2 " and sitting in some illegal seat situation!!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.................. the Nanny State!!

Damn Mengano/Fulano.....this is really the first time I read something from you that .......was a great point. Add the fact that city busses are the
same.....of which many school kids take.

I never knew dentists and school buses had such strong lobbyists, lol.
Seriously though it seems to me a seat belt modification attachment of some sort that would make the seat belt fit better would be another maybe
better option.

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Placing infants and small children in age-appropriate car safety seats significantly reduces the odds that they
will die if they are in a motor vehicle accident, new research shows.
Babies reaped the most benefit from being placed in a car seat. Their odds of dying in a car crash dropped by three-quarters if they were in a safety
restraint seat. But older children also saw significant benefits, with a mortality risk reduction of at least 60 percent.
"The findings from this study indicate that child restraints greatly reduce the risk of death among children 3 years and younger involved in severe
traffic collisions," the authors of the study wrote.
"The higher effectiveness of safety seats among infants is likely due to their overall fragility," added study author Thomas Rice, a research
epidemiologist at the Traffic Safety Center in the department of environmental sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.
Results of the study appear in the February issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
Car accidents are the leading cause of unintentional injury and death for children older than 1 year, according to background information in the
study. More than 500 children younger than 3 died as a result of motor vehicle collisions in 2005, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention statistics cited in the study.
Most states have laws requiring child safety seats in cars, and use of these devices is high for the youngest children. The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration estimated that 93 percent of babies younger than 1 year were placed in car safety seats in 2006, while 91 percent of 1- to
3-year-olds also rode in car seats, the study reported.
The study included data on child fatalities from motor vehicle collisions that occurred from 1996 to 2005. From a large initial sample of nearly
300,000 vehicles, the researchers chose 6,303 vehicles to study because of the availability of complete data on ages, positions of vehicle occupants
and the type of restraints that were used (shoulder or lap seat belt, car seat, or none). They compared data from this group to a closely matched
group of vehicles involved in nonfatal collisions.
The odds of a baby under 1 year of age dying in a car accident drop by 73 percent if the infant was riding in a baby car seat. For children between 1
and 2, the odds of dying in a collision went down by 76 percent if they were properly restrained. For 2 to 3 year olds, the odds of a fatality in a
car crash dropped by about 60 percent if the toddler was in a car seat.
Safety seats were found to be most effective in preventing fatalities in rollover accidents, rural environments and accidents involving light trucks.
In the older age group -- children age 2 to 3 years old -- seat belts were almost as effective as car safety seats in preventing fatalities

When I was a kid MOST of the injuries were INTENTIONAL, at least in my house

I remember STANDING in the front seat between my Dad driving, and Mom, sitting shotgun holding my baby brother, no seatbelts for anyone of us. Or
standing on the "hump", in the backseat so I could see over the seat. Still here. Seat belts--OK, Little kids in car seats--Ok but this is stupid.
My 18 year old grand-daughter would probably get us a ticket for being too short.
