San Carlos fishermen burn boat poaching sea life

Fishermen enraged at the presence of "poachers" in the area, took control and burned a boat that moments before was captured by personnel of CONAPESCA as the poachers were surprised with illegal marine life. The crew, whose identity was not revealed, managed to escape and were not detained.

Information provided by the Department of Public Safety and Municipal Tranportation of Comondú indicated that at 5:25PM, with support from elements from the department, inspectors from the Fund for the Protection of Marine Resources (FONMAR) were patrolling in Bahiá Magdalena on the boat "Cobra I," property of the federal agency, when they intercepted a boat with poached sea life.

The crew of the suspicious boat started to flee while tossing the poached sea life into the sea. Upon seeing they were pursued by the authorities, the presumed poachers headed their boat at the pursuers, causing a collision, and using the time gained to flee. The FONMAR authorities towed the suspect boat, which held several kilos of clams, to the Cooperative Society of San Carlos' boatyards, to continue the investigation.

It was there that members of the co-op took control of the boat and set it afire, totally destroying it, due to their sense of powerlessness to stop poachers from taking sea products, and with the authorities doing nothing stop the illegal plundering of sea life, which as in this case, was a clam that was illegal to take.
