Open pit mining project?

I heard that there is a BIG, open pit copper mine project coming soon to the area near El Arco. Maybe 500 employees putting in housing and everything. Anyone heard about this? I remember hearing something about it around 3 years ago but not since until now. Too bad if it's true, it's sooo beautiful out there.

We drove through El Arco a few months back. We spoke to some guys there and they said at the time there were 14 people there. But, we also noticed a number of brand new buildings on the surrounding hills that looked like dorm style buildings. So it would not surprise me if something is in the works.

I just did some googling, is that a word? Here's what I found

Grupo Mexico's El Arco copper project on hold

MEXICO CITY, April 7 | Wed Apr 7, 2010 3:31pm EDT

(Reuters) - Grupo Mexico's El Arco copper project in Baja California is on hold until the company's shuttered Cananea copper complex is reopened, a company executive said on Wednesday.

Xavier Garcia de Quevedo, the head of Grupo Mexico's mining division, told reporters the El Arco project would move ahead once the Cananea was reopened.

Grupo Mexico's Cananea facility has been shut for more than two years due to a labor dispute. Although Grupo Mexico has won legal victories against the union the strikers refuse to leave the mine.

Garcia de Quevedo did not provide an anticipated restart date for Cananea. (Reporting by Mica Rosenberg; Writing by Robert Campbell)

And then I read that the Cananea mine is back to full production as of 5/2011. So it looks like it's true. I know there's been a lot of activity out there.

No, copper I was told and also read some articles online about it. There has been a small operation out there for a long time. This is going to be big , from what I hear. Grupo Mexico owns it and is the largest mining corporation in Mexico and the third largest copper producer in the world.

There are many mineral resources in Baja California. El Arco was a gold mine operating 100 years ago (the main road used to pass through there). Copper reserves were announced in the late 1960's, but still no new mining for the copper ore. Baja is just a tough cookie to get anything moving very fast!

Santa Rosalia was a huge copper mine, but now manganese is also being developed in the area.

Gold south of El Triunfo in an area the originally was a silver mine center is being developed.

The La Fortuna mine runs 24/7, 40 miles north of San Felipe digging out gold.
