Coyote Bay - 2012 SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES
This morning's anchorage view prompted me to *'ponder some' with my coffee...and then go for an aspirin....and back to my viewing chair.
*(And I know better than to ponder more than... 'a bit'.)
I was thinking, "The clock is ticking. If I were to cease being a landlubber and become a liveaboard, which would be the best boat type/design?"
Power or Sail?
Decisions - decisions..so many variables in this question.
Hmmm...I know these sailors below very well...and their boats. All of them (2 trimarans - 1 pilothouse cutter ketch) have sailed from Baja to the
South Seas and back...is that important?
Which would be best for me, I wonder? ....so many variables in this question.. sooo many...sigh..
I'm tending to lean towards a high fuel bill....and a larger beer fridge.
The FB motoryacht below is Jim & Laurieboats new way to explore the Cortez..and beyond. A floating condo with twin diesels. Her name is
"Uno Mas"
Below: It's a buyer's market right now..and lots of Marine Trader trawlers like this one in Seattle are priced very low....but you still have to pay
at the pump.
I was daydreaming and this one kinda reminded me of my old diesel, "Pompano"...so I wrote in a new boat name.
(Think: 'African Queen'.)
A funky trawler to go gunkholing around the Cortez and then follow the Uno Mas wake to..the other Baja.
WELL, HEY..DAY-DREAMING IS FREE.
"Make Voyages! Attempt Them! There is Little Else."
HOW ABOUT YOU? WHICH WAY WOULD YOU GO?
POWER....OR SAIL?
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

"Sail", with a good diesel "kicker" to back things up.

Power!!! One hand to steer and push buttons, talk on the radio and such, the other arm, the one connected to the Pacifico to put around your
sweeties' shoulder.

This is the boat I would DREAM about having on the Coyote Bay water! And, it's lady friendly...

The SAME boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It's about what you are made of NOT the circumstance.

I would sail to the South Seas and island hop from one atoll to another across the Pacific and back.

He is best known for his music, which often portrays an "island escapism" lifestyle.
See, I have a problem with this. If you pursue something you enjoy it's pooh-poohed as escapism . Escapism is a derogatory term.

Pompano, I'm sure you know that every boat is a compromise. We currently own a large, old, powerboat. It is our business, and we could never afford
it's fuel and upkeep unless it paid it's own way.
I am thinking along the same lines that you are, and have taken the following self-test to help narrow the search a bit.
1. How much do I have to spend to purchase, outfit, moor, and operate a new boat?
2. Where do I want to go in my new boat?
3. When do I want to go there?
4. How many people do I want to take with me?
5. What will I want to do using my boat as a platform? Fish? Dive? Gunkhole?
6. How dependent do I want to be on communications, entertainment and other appliances?
For me, the answers seem to be pointing at a trimaran in the 35 to 40 foot range, and an investment (including purchase and outfitting) of less than
$50,000.
I have little money to spend, want to spend most of my time near-coastal in the winter (no AC). I want to be able to have room for family or friends
to join us (hence 2+ staterooms) and I want to be able to both fish and dive from the boat (large swim platform and wet storage areas needed). I can
get by without a TV or regular internet, and really just need a stove (propane) a coffee maker (industrial) and a refrigerator. I don't want a
generator. So, I need some solar panels, a big battery bank and an inverter.
I have had slow sailboats, fast powerboats, and slow powerboats. I think it's time for a fast sailboat.
Remember, the search for your new boat is at least half the fun!

The old boat saying goes- "The happiest days in a boat owners life are the day they buy the boat, and the day they sell it."
I have been trying to reach the second part of the saying for two years with a boat up in the San Juan Islands. Terrible times to be a seller.

Two weeks ago we encountered this beauty in St. Barts, Caribbean. It belongs to a Russian Tycoon who is running for president
against Putin. The helicopter was off to lunch on another island. Not sure it would fit in Coyote Bay.

You live in a very nice part of the country. Especially in the summer. Thanks for the offer. The boat has been winterized and Roche harbor Marine takes
care of the maintenance. We have been trying to sell it for a couple of years now. It's a 2003 Bayliner 4788 in pretty good shape. Very little use.
Asking 200k if you know anyone looking.Docked at B 13B
