Canada urging caution to Mexico-bound Canadians

Dangers await in Mexico, Canada's Foreign Affairs department is warning travelers.

Government websites are awash with warnings for those looking to head south on vacation, saying it’s entirely possible they’ll find violence instead.

It’s advised Canadians headed south “exercise a high degree of caution due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country.”

The government’s travel advice and advisories website says “high levels of criminal activity, as well as occasional demonstrations and protests, remain a concern throughout the country.”

Those who insist on going to Mexico are recommended to travel by air rather than crossing the border on the ground, as that area is a cause for particular concern.

“Shootouts, attacks, and illegal roadblocks may occur at any time,” says the website.

“Criminals especially target SUVs and full-size pickup trucks for theft and carjacking along highways in the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Sonora, and Sinaloa.”

The effect of violence on the psyche of Canadians has begun showing and more have grown hesitant to venture there, says one local travel agent.

“There’s lots of people that come in here and say no — I’d rather not go to Mexico,” said Trevor Holmen, who works with Aero Travel.

Just to err on the SAFE side-CLOSE the Border

Between the U.S. and Canada.

Save those Canuckials from the consequences of poor judgment.

It's our Brotherly duty to save those who speak [Almost] the same language as we do.

Let the Frog-Canucks through, though. They deserve whatever they get.

"fear based"??? Hmmmmmmmmm, don't think so, Ken.

When I was a cop, I was not afraid, but I certainly wanted to know what I was gettin into before I sallied forth, if possible. It is called "fore-warned, is fore-armed", or something like that.

I view all of Mengano's posts this way. :light: and you can take them, or leave them------your choice.

LET SEE....
DROVE to Nicaragua during the height of the Reagon Wars (oh those terrible Sandinistas!), surfed my brains our with best buddy, met people who's hospitality even in their poverty were the best I ever met, have memories that I fall asleep to every night.
DROVE to El Salvador during the height of the Reagon Wars ...conclusion, same as above.
DROVE to Guatemala pre armistice (probably over all those mass graves that the 'good guys' buried those nasty, scary, people in) and fell in love with the people (still visit friends we made there).
Put over 200,000 miles in Central America and Mexico since the '70's with women, babies , children riding shotgun. Camped on remote beaches in those locations (up to and soon after this day).
I think I'll leave them, Barry A

One thing I don't do...is read the paper in this country. Probably wouldn't leave my house.

PS...

I'm the white guy with the frizzy hair...conseguence of no bathing for three months...surfing keeps you clean.
The skinny guy is my buddy...we'd average a loss of 30 pounds each over that time because the 'good' troops the US backed were destroying all the crops and deficating in the wells. Yeah us.

Blah blah f-ing blah the Canadian Harper gov't is a full of chite as the Yank gov't with its warnings!

Lets see enough Canadians are murdered while traveling to the US, do you see travel adviseries not to go? Of course not!

Yet another pointless Fulano post

So says the man who operates a rental retreat business in Baja. Shouldn't people in your business be required to put a disclaimer after your comments? It may be important for people reading here to understand that the opinion you express on safety in Baja has a personal financial motivation behind it.

Just saying.

The silver lining in the dark cloud is that there are more choice spots for us RVers. But still enough of us to have the company of others and the safety in numbers. BTW, last fall the majority of non-Mexican license plates I saw at the RV spots were Canadian.

Can't wait to get south again!

The Sierra San Pedro Martir region has some great 4 wheeling and areas for adventure. I have lots of great memories there. Here are a few pictures to share.

The parking lot behind El Palomar after dinner. Anyone know the status of the Rolls Royce parked behind there? Anyway, Dan and Andrew (RIP) langhing it up.

I personally feel that once you get past Ensenada things are pretty safe on the Baja. I would think twice about flying or RV'ing down the mainland. My experience with US news sources is that they don't report much world events unless it directly affects the US. For those of you who don't know, within the last month or so a Canadian retiree was killed in Malaque, a Canadian girl and her boyfriend were killed near Hautulco, and just last week a Canadian girl was almost beat to death in an elevator of a resort hotel in Mazatlan. So Mexico has been on the news quite a bit up here in Canada. Many Canadians have canceled Mexico and picked alternate locations for their winter holidays this year.

I'm not sure if I spelt the Mexican cities correctly so go easy on me, I don't have time to look them up.

Jack,
Too much motorcycling and camping along Bahia Concepcion seems to have caused some brain-rot :biggrin:

You were doing fine until it came to "spelting"....

The warnings are having an effect, judging from the lack of gringos on our trip south 2 weeks ago.

Assuming the WORST ................

Or, Best, depending on the View:

IF A few-thousand Canuckials were lost in Mexico (highly Improbable), WHAT would be the Downside ?

Seriously.

I've wracked my Brain giving the question weighty thought and haven't been able to answer that.

HELP !

It WOULD reduce the stress on the Canuckian Socialist-System.

Well, maybe not, since those traveling are probably making money.

Of course, if they make that money dealing Drugs, like most mowed down Down South, their loss would be a gain, I guess.

Wouldn't it ?

Another Riddle within an Enigma wrapped in a Conundrum.

NO!

Boy , you are so wrong.

Not Enough Said!

I don't know "goat" . For someone who is purportedly so educated as your suppos-ed self , maybe you should get out a little more often and experience the real world.

People have a right to know

People have a right to info. Whether it's a State Department notification or someone on a pertinant message board posting beware of all the finger crooking that goes on, ad naseum , from would be B&B operators only to find out later , in a state of nolo contendre, that they got their wife and kids into a heap of steaming mierda they would never be able to dream of.

You got to know what you're doing down here and what's going on at all times. If you are not an aware person, it won't work for you.

You can verbally paint the picture any way you like but Baja isn't all fun and games

Just my 2cents :dudette:
