If you're going to San Ignacio

be sure to try the Empanadas here!

20 pesos for three. The pastry was light and the date filling was'nt overly sweet, delicious. South side of plaza. (I would not share the three Empanadas with another next time!)

IMHO, any positive reviews for eating in San Ignacio are very welcome.

The town, as beautiful and unique as it is has really never had any real go-to restaurants.

Oh, I know that Ignacio Springs has its fans. As does Rice and Beans. Having eaten in both, I still am often deterred from making the town a stop on our trips simply because after spending hours on the highway, a comfortable, relaxing and tasty meal is a major reason why we stopped.

I wholeheartedly also endorse the DATIL stand. Don't get discouraged if the stand is not open...walk around the back and the owner lady will accommodate your requests.
Date pie (pay, Spanish spelling) was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Stop at a market and get some whipped cream...YUMMO!

On edit:
I made a second run there on the way back North, plus picked up enough as gifts.

Based on your recomendations, I stopped there today. Empanadas were great but the fresh made date pie was heavenly. Thanks

Speaking of this, does anyone know of a good fish taco stand in San Ignacio close to the plaza? I drove around a few weeks ago but didn't see any place (other than along the highway). I was hoping to take a break and hang out at a stand much like the one mentioned here where they sell empanadas, but for fish tacos instead. We'll definitely pick up a date pie at the stand mentioned here; sounds great!

There's a guy named Jerry that was formerly a boxer that worked at Campo Rene for a while. He ran a taco cart that was really good. Not sure if its still there.

Uncle Jerry was not there this year and we missed seeing him. I think he has moved elsewhere now.

Fish taco --- don't know, but we really like the carne asada taco stand that is open at night at the far end of the plaza from the church---the one with the old back of a pick-up truck.

The other day we watched the repeat of Huell Howser's trip to San Ignacio and guess what he said about the date pies.:biggrin:

From the pictures, it had to be an older episode as it was definitely before the big flood and didn't see any evidence from the last fire.

Love San Ignacio! Glad this thread came back as I still LOVE that picture with the dog---so very laid back like the town!.

I was just going to as what "pay" is. You answered my question. pay=pie. Fun with phonics.

I love that dog too; such a great shot.

I think I know the stand you're talking about; if you cross the plaza with the church at your back, it would be on the left side across street, right? I'd take carne asada tacos, too; thought I'd start with fish and see where the thread went.

Yes, that would be the one--the one that is only open at night!

Also, Restaurant la Misión Kadakaamán was closed this year and according to Juanita at Casa Leree, it probably will not re-open.

We had a good dinner this year at the Desert Inn---quite good. A few years back we had a terrible dinner at Rice and Beans, but in talking with Juanita, she said they now have a really good chef. So we may try it again.

I've watched this show a couple of times. As I recall, he flew to the lagoon, as do many well-heeled tourists. Then, he took a drive into town.

Unless he's been there more than once, it would seem that it was 2004, judging by the thread here...http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=5475

Thanks for pointing out that it's only open at night; I missed that the first time! I actually had a very good dinner at Rice & Beans last time I ate there, but it was a few years ago. I enjoyed sitting on the balcony outside, but it would be great to just hang at a stand by the plaza if possible. We'd be going through around lunch time so hopefully someone will post a spot.

in town, Rene's (east of square) is pretty good. Out on highway, Quichule's is good (across from miltary checkpoint).
