The Most Courageous Woman You Have Never Heard About

Tijuana editor among 'Fearless Women in World'

Adela Navarro Bello is one of four Mexican women on list

Por: SanDiegoRed.com 7 Marzo 2012

"Newsweek's story this week of the "150 Fearless Women in the World" lists the co-director of the Tijuana's crusading weekly newspaper Zeta,.

"Drug cartels have threatened her life and killed her colleagues, but this journalist refuses to quit exposing their activities," the magazine said of Adela Navarro Bello.

"As general director of the Tijuana-based Zeta weekly Adela Navarro Bello fearlessly criticizes the Mexican government's handling of the drug war and corruption of that country," the story said.

The International Women's Media Foundation honored Navarro Bello, 43, for her courage in journalism.

Newsweek said that they women selected for the list "are starting revolutions, opening schools, and fostering a brave new generation. From Detroit to Kabul, these women are making their voices heard."

Several Mexican women are also listed, including Attorney General Marisela Morales, Congresswoman Rosi Orozco and Supreme Court Justice Olga Sánchez Cordero.

Morales is cited for being the first female in Mexico's history to lead Attorney General's Office (known as the PGR) during its fierce battle against organized crime.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama honored Morales' efforts last year.

The magazine also singled out the work of Congresswoman Rosi Orozco in her fight against the trafficking of humans.

"She is president of the Special Commission against Human Trafficking, with which she has been working to stop the human slave trade and encouraging other politicians to take a stand," the magazine said about the Orozco, who represents Mexico City.

The magazine cited the work of Justice Sánchez Cordero for her role since 1995 in Mexico's Supreme Court.

The majority of the women on the list are from the United States.

They include former GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann; Clinton; Susan de Anda, an advocate for safe water for migrant communities in the San Joaquin Valley; Jaycee Dugard, who survived a years-long kidnapping ordeal; Gabriele Giffords, the Arizona congresswoman who was gravely injured by a would-be assassin; Kamala Harris, California's first female attorney general; Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey."
