Hip Replacement Advice, Please. ..

Any advice, suggestions for hip replacements Dr.s and locations - La Paz versus Guadalajara?

Thanks in advance.

Edited to mention we are looking for "Anterior Hip Replacement" availability in Mexico. This is the least invasive type of replacement.

I'd be just as concerned about the hardware they use as the Doctor installing it. Please please please do all the research more than once and get it done right the first time.

VERY good advice. My sister had both hips replaced in the states and then there was a recall on some parts there were being used in many hip replacements. Fortunately, her new parts were from the same company, but were not the recalled ones.

Also, just as a side note, compared to the pain she had BEFORE the surgeries, she said the after surgery pain was easy.

GOOD LUCK---

I had the "True Anterior Hip Replacement". Got me out of an electric scooter that I was in for two years. I have had ZERO negative consequences, only wish I had done it earlier. Getting off the oxycodone was a living hell and much worse than the hip replacement. After a month of titration I spent three weeks only sleeping one night a week. Horrible.

The recovery from the surgery was easy with the only restriction of movement being some obscure ballet move. The only pain for me was the healing of the incision, not bad at all!

This proceedure is becoming the standard but it will take time for it to be integrated as it requires specialized training and a special table to perform the surgery.

If you can get it it is much less invasive and healing is much quicker as they cut NO ligaments or tendons and few muscles.

They are working on similar surgical proceedures for knees at the UofWashington and lets hope they come online soon also.

Shop carefully. Done right it is the ONLY way to go.

Best to you.

investigate rate of infection. it is about 3 percent in the US. KNOW what your life will be like IF you contract an infection. it's not good.

if you want another knee/hip replacement AFTER the initial infection, re infection rate in the US is 40 percent.

and that reinfection rate applies to any and all future surgeries or blood draws or finger cuts.

as ifly says: shop carefully.

Echoing most of the preceding, I've had two and wish I hadn't waited so long. The last one by Dr. Hedley in Phoenix, a Brit who studied under the guy who invented the procedure, excellent surgeon. I haven't had any leg problems since. A couple years ago, after I had one but kept putting off the second one, I had a conference in San Francisco. Oh gawd, those hills! It was pure hell.

I didn't get the less invasive procedure as I was advised the chance of infection was higher. Recovery wasn't all that bad, I was walking within days.

Ah yes, oxycodone. Have used it for four months with my herniated disc. 10/325 5X day. Was on oral morphine 30/mg twice a day plus the oxycodone. I have six tablets left and am in Mexico where there is no oxycodone or anything stronger than tramadol. Time to tough it out I guess.

I would make darn sure the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and myself are on the same page before proceeding. Mex doctors DO NOT issue pain meds nor are they available in a farmacia. Take whatever you will need from home.
