Right on. If you are traveling Mex 1 all the way, 3 days is a breeze to Mulege.

When we head down to La Paz or Cabo, we usually stop at Jardines Baja in San Quintin first night, either Cowboy or Caracoles in Guerrero Negro second night, and make it all the way to Loreto during sunshine the third day.

Oooops - sorry, looks like I deleted my post. I try to edit in an outside editor because I can't stand typing in this little window. And must have screwed up somewhere. Here is the question again. Keep 'em coming.

This will be my first trip all the way down the peninsula. I will be travelling with my wife, and currently plan on driving to La Paz in four-five days and then stay a while.

After studying the maps. I figure it will take me 2-3 days to get Mulege with as of now unplanned stops. I want to get down fairly quickly, spend time and then take my time coming back stopping in the places that looked interesting on the way down.

Does this seem like a reasonable plan - timewise? Planning on 6-8 hours/day at the wheel. Driving a 4x4 Suburban.

4X4 Suburban should get about 15 MPG, so count on spending about $600.00 in gas.
Two days to Mulege is plenty.
However, you should spend a day or two in Bahia Asuncion, especially at Shari's place. It's a gem worth the find.
6-8 hours a day driving is a real breeze.
La Paz is worth spending 5-6 days. Be sure you take a drive to Tecolote beach early in the morning and hire one of the tour boats to take you past the Isla de Espiritu Santo snorkel trip (plus they provide a picnic).
You should also take some exploratory trips to the East Cape, just South of La Paz. Bahia de Muertos.
Buy a Moon Baja Handbook, it has excellent explanations of all interesting Baja areas.

Amigo, spring is a great time to visit the sea of cortes side of the peninsula before it gets too hot. Pacific side is cool and breezy. Udo, don't scare the guy to death with your bad math calculations! $600 dollars??:o Have fun. Tio

:o:O

Currently it costs me $90.00 in gas for a weekend trip from 5/55 fwys to Ensenada. The FJ Cruiser gets about 20 MPG.

But when we did our trip to Cabo and back last December, we spent $530 U.S.
That was for 2-1/2 weeks. Yes, we had about 500 miles in side trips.

Acurland will probably accumulate about the same side trip mileage.

What is you goal - spending a few days in La Paz, or seeing more Baja? You can cover that distance in 3 days without seeing much. And you can spend a day or two here and there. 1 or 2 days I would spend in Bay of LA, taking a boat to Smith and other islands and/or remote beaches in Pescadero, Piedra Barnabe etc. It's an amazing place, but you'll have to detour 40 miles (paved road). 1 day is enough for Mulege. 2 days I would spend in Loreto, taking a boat to Coronado and/or Carmen island beaches.

have a wonderful trip ... I agree that it is a good idea to get a guidebook and read to find out what appeals to you. Bahia Conception is worth a day or so if you like warm waters and a gorgeus beach to go along with that warm water ..... I am sure folks here can suggest places to stay at. When we go it is a day trip and one of my favorite trips.

If you stop by San Ignacio -- look for CASA LEREE to stay or or just visit - museum and really interesting artifacts and Juanita (the owner who is from san francisco, calif.) has lots of interesting tidbits of information.

I think the Sea of Cortez side is the best this time of year - Bahia Asuncion and La Bocana and Punta Abreojos are nice but the water is freezing and winds are prevalent (high winds predicted starting this wednesday).

Enjoy your trip - La Paz, Todos Santos and La Ventana are beautiful.

Come visit La Bocana
