GOOD RIBS, LA PAZ
La Paz has yet another addition to its thriving restaurant scene.
The place is called J & R Ribs and is located on the corner of B. Dominguez and 5 de Mayo. Entire menu consists of BBQ'ed beef ribs, thin-cut
French fries, green salad and soft drinks. Hours are 2 to 10 PM. Inside and outside seating, stools inside, picnic tables on the sidewalk outside.
Eat in or take out. Eating in is better, getting the ribs and the fries when they're fresh and hot is best way to go. The take-out order we enjoyed
last evening was not quite as good as having the ribs fresh off the grill.
I think the ribs are boiled first, then finished on a grill and served with a variety of tasty BBQ sauces. Ribs are falling-off-the-bone tender and
very lean. Prices are reasonable, 135 pesos for a full rack of ribs with a large order of fries plus one soft drink. Serving sizes are generous, one
order of the full rack was just right when split down the middle between the wife and me.
We hope the place makes it. Their product is simple, tasty, quick and reasonably priced.

You mention they're "Beefribs"?
Never heard of a rack of beefribs.
Now if they would be pork, it would be a good deal.
Always looking for a good rib place or one that has good lamb.

You know, this is kinda embarrassing, but neither the wife nor I could tell for sure whether the ribs we enjoyed so much were beef or pork. The
generous amount of meat on the bones suggested beef to us. Also the shape of the bones, 1/2" diameter, round and short. Pork ribs are kind of flat,
aren't they? Either way, the method of cooking and the flavorful sauces make for a satisfying meal.
The only good lamb we've had here in La Paz has been at Palermo's Sunday brunch. It's a trifle pricey, at $220. per, but Palermo puts on the best
buffet we've had in all of BCS, going back to 1987.
We frequently find baby back pork ribs at Soriana's meat counter, also some of the best steaks in La Paz, from a ranch in Sonora. Quality stuff.
Aramburo's is very good about cutting to order but the quality of their meat can't touch the quality at Soriana and the prices are near equal. Word
is Soriana's new store near Home Depot is even better than the original on Forjadores.
We hear La Encantada, also on B. Dominguez near 5 de Mayo, has jazz on Saturday nights. Does anyone know anything about the food they serve there?

Thanks for the review Bajajazz. There is also a ribs place in La Paz called Senor Porky's on the malecon between Allende street and the closed up
Arco hotel. We haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list of places to check out. Has anyone been there and have anything to report? Obviously from
the name of the place, I'd say it has to be pork ribs......

Tried Porky's last November. Not impressed !!
Liked the ribs ( and prices ) much better at Campestre, on the road to el Centro ( left at Whale's tail ) a few blocks past Walmart on the left. Much
nicer place and great service.

Sad to report that Señor Porky's closed last week. I emailed the owner after I failed to see their ad in the Baja Western Onion and it was closed
tight a couple days ago. He confirmed that there wasn't enough business to keep the restaurant going but said that they do offer take out BBQ at his
furniture store "Casa de Decor".
I'm not a connoisseur of ribs but I liked their pulled pork. I'll miss sipping their mango margaritas on the malecón.
Delicious arrachera and meats at Campestre.

Thanks for the update Oladulce - I was wanting to try the pulled pork too....oh well. Looks like we'll be trying the J & R Ribs place. Haven't
been to Campestre in a long time - my beloved had a couple of so-so meals there ages ago and has no interest in returning. I may have to work on
trying to convince him to go back.

I will be back in town this week for the no moon as it is Pargo time.
I stay between the Los Arcos hotel and Allende. It is great that there are so many restaurant options within walking distance.
The SHACK and the Chinese restaurant both have ribs and the Shack has had pulled Pork specials before.
Campestre is a favorite of mine but I do not have a car and feel stupid getting a cab to go to dinner by myself. I'll buy Lencho dinner (or any
Nomad) for a ride to/from the restaurant.
I could not eat at Porky's because they did not cook their food
on site. It seemed odd to have a restaurant without a kitchen.
but said that they do offer take out BBQ at his furniture store "Casa de Decor".

Just back from J&R Ribs. Was a little windy and not suitable weather to eat on the sidewalk. Inside seating rather puny. So, took an order home.
Bajajazz, they're porkribs and they are pretty good. Not the place to take a date, but good food for the price.
