Building supplies in Baja Sur

Of the home construction supply/ferreterias in Loreto, which has the best inventory and gives the best prices?

Specifically, we're looking for a source for 2-inch foam sheet insulation.

We're finding costs here in Mulege are not competitive, so we're expanding our range of suppliers.

Also looking for mini-splits and installers in this area.

Thanks for your help.

Have you looked at EPS ("Electrico Plomeria del Sur"?) in Cd C for your foam panels? The main store is East of the highway, on the street with the large rooftop antennas at the south end of town. I don't know how their prices compare though. Our casetones (roof and ceiling 4-6" foam blocks) came from EPS.

You might want to try BlockMex in La Paz also. They are the Tri-D panel distributor (from mexicali). They have a large inventory of foam panels, foam blocks, and moldura etc in stock and had the best prices. They mentioned delivery was possible, even to our areas North of Cd Constitución.

There is also a branch of Electrico Plomeria de Sud California in Loreto that has a pretty good stock including foam panels. Not sure how the price compares, however Loreto is generally not the cheapest place to buy stuff. However you have to figure in the cost of travel/delivery etc. Right now there are a few places selling 1 ton Mirage mini splits for $4,300 pesos, which is pretty good. I looked at them in La Paz last week at the same price. We have a great local installer (Manny) who installs a mini split for $1000 complete, and very good work.

Talk to Chalugo for mini-splits Maria. He got 4 out of Ensenada (delivered) for half what I paid in La Paz.

Thanks for your help.

Back in your own backyard... or ferreteria. Shop local.

We drove to Loreto yesterday and checked all the building supply houses there for cisterns, pressure-tanks & pumps, 2x4s, and 2" foam insulation.

We found all their prices higher than those offered in Mulege, so we've decided to shop local.

For example, we're getting that 2" foam insulation at $290 pesos/4x8-foot sheet delivered from Ferreteria Yee here in town. The company in Loreto wanted $385 pesos per sheet. Cisterns and pumps are a better value locally, too.

However, we found excellent value on blocks from Ejido Bonfil, which is about half-way between Sta. Rosalia and San Ignacio. They make their block using the pumpice stone from the volcanos; they're lightweight, solid and the same price delivered as the excellent but heavy block made locally here in Mulege valley. We've also found good value on certain items from the hardware store in Punta Chivato.

With all of the building going on in Santa Rosalia, it pays to shop at all of the stores. Chiminea, on the main drag just north of the marina is owned by Benson and has usually good prices on most things. Flemate, which is a Construama store, is further north on the west side of the road and usually has lower prices on almost everything. I buy very little from Benny Camarena which is just north of the intersection or train going into Santa Rosalia. Guero, who owns the materiales at Punta Chivato has some good prices and is in the process of building a new store across from the entrance into San Bruno.

On block, the best block comes from Vizcaino and is sold at Flemate because they use washed sand in the process.

Mulegena,
Sorry, I have been off line for a week getting a new hip for my husband.

That foam truck that comes from LaPaz is the Block Mex plant in Centenario or Chemetla.

Call and order it, pay by credit card and it arrives Tuesday or Thursday!

Mulegena,
I will be back in LaPaz this next Friday the 8th if you need some unicell picked up, I can get it as far as Loreto Saturday afternoon, since I have to be there by 2p.m. Sat.

I currently live in Lopez Mateos. But run back and forth to Mulege generally once a month, but not this month.
