PEMEX...beware!

Do not buy fuel at the PEMEX just South of the military inspection in the Guerrero Negro area.
Not only do they rip you off by shortchanging you on gas, they also shortchange you on the Dollar/Peso exchange 12.5 to 1.

Well, what kind of exchange rate were you hoping for?

Every Pemex I have been to is always about 1.5 pesos below the internet rate; sometimes even more.

Carry pesos that you've converted at YOUR convenience. They deserve something for being your intermediary.

As always...I buy my Pesos at an ATM from a bank in Baja, and that way you get the most favorable exchange rate.
Then use those Pesos for buying fuel an other things.

See!

That's the best reason to pay in Pesos, rather than USD, Right, Wiley?

BTW... Wiley, we will be down your way between the 27th of June and July 2. It's supposed to be my birthday present.

Also, in the heat, doesn't gas expand, so you don't get the full litre?

The exchange rate is posted at the station it may or may not match what the current exchange is its called cost of doing buisness. you are not required to pay more than the posted price on the pump which is in pesos last time I checked it was the coin of the land.

My husband is the only gringo I know who fuels up in Santa Rosalia.
Not me. And never in GN. Always El Rosario, Jesus Maria and the station in town in Mulege.

The station on the right going north is fine, just not the station on the left going and coming.

Maybe a little off topic but it is a Pemex thread:

Just passed through the Pemex station on the highway south of Mulege. The one that has gotten the complaints for years.

One of the pumps is sealed/closed with a closure order from Profepa. Reading the closure order states that they were closed due to inaccurate deliveries. Imagine that!

So, all Nomads that complained were right and Profepa actually did something.

So, the bigger question is, are the remaining 3 or 4 pumps accurate, or not????

no time right now to dig through my photos....but I will soon...the dunes are spectacular and wonderful for families and fun to swim at and jump off huge sand dunes, the drive out to the old lighthouse is magnificent birdwatching in the wetlands and has gorgeous sunsets there...fishing off the lighthouse pier...swimming at la pozitas...the lagoons of course...the charming tree park by the bank...some great restaurants...good shopping...2 sushi bars...chinese food...some good mexican rock bands live at some good clubs...pool halls...and when it is scalding hot everywhere else in the summer...GN is nice and cool.

there is lots to do and the people who live there are somewhat cosmopolitan as there are folks from all over the mainland employed at the salt works so while it may not look that way to a tourist driving through...there are artistic & cultural events and things going on making it an interesting place to live.

I lived there for many years and while the weather is less than desireable (due to the salt works own microclimate) there are lots of beautiful beaches very close by and interesting people living there.

I, too, like Guerrero Negro. It's often compared to San Quintin by tourists but is really much nicer. We spend most of the time indoors, however. I don't think the outdoor scene is very pleasurable due to afternoon winds and morning fog.
