Go have fun Frank! (72 hours inside the border zone does not require any FMM)

What the border zone is, is not clear... It used to be to Maneadero, and maybe still is. Some rumors say it is to San Quintin and others say it is the entire north state.

We are not aware of any change that reduces the border zone area or 3 day limit.

No dumb fmm ?'s, just the circle of unclear info
from Mex Immigration, pick one , in the last few
months there have been reports of the following,
G Negro Mex Imm Office now issueing fmm's, no fine
nada, just pay the $21, last time I checked GN was
400 mi. + so. of the border, this was verfied by someone on this board who lives in the GN area, a guy off the Baja fishing board
was in the TJ Imm Office, was told he could a free fmm
for use only to Rosarito Beach any further so. he would
need the $ fmm, a guy was allowed to board a TJ/Cabo
flight with no fmm whatsoever, was told he didn't need it
for a short stay, me I'm so cautious/paranoid I stick with
the old worn out 72 hr. reg

I think I read on one of the Mexican Government sites the definition of Border Zone was 18 miles or 30 KM south of the international border...

Years ago there were 2 different auto license plates for the state of Baja California, one was Baja California and the other was Frontera, the Frontera was not supposed to be south of the Border Zone or travel to the mainland of Mexico...

In Baja, that mainland line was adjusted to include the Ensenada area (70 miles south) and San Felipe (125 miles south). In Sonora, Puerto Peņasco, 100+ miles south, was also inside the 'border zone'

There are still two styles of plates. The Frontera plate (now blue and orange) is for vehicles imported used (mostly when 5-10 years old). Frontera vehicles can travel anywhere in Baja (north and south), the free zone in Sonora down to Guyamas, the narrow border zone further east, and the USA and Canada, without problem. For elsewhere on the mainland they need a temporary import permit like a US car.

The other Baja plate (blue on both top and bottom) is for "national" vehicles - cars that were brought new in Mexico. These don't need the temporary import permit for the mainland.
