No passport. CDL okay?

Seriously, will my wife and I be barred from re-entering the U.S. if all we have are California drivers licenses? Thanks.

DL's are indeed accepted (driving /walking only).....and no......you wont get banned from Mexico. You may get sent to the secondary as punishment though :-(

In the last month many of my son's friends have crossed back into Cali w/o a passport, both walking and driving and there's been no problem at all. One of them had no paperwork at all and was sent through. So that's the latest.

You will, however be required to have a US passport if and when you may want a Mex tourist permit.

are you a US citizen? if not, DL is not a valid visa for entry. if yes, DL may be adequate ID to get back in, unless...

do you have an accent? if so, you are alien until proven otherwise.

It May Go Something Like This...

"Good morning"
"Are you U.S. citizens?"
"Yes"
"Passports?"
"We didn't bring them"
"You know they're required now (this is when you should state something to let the inspector hear your speech and accent clearly see next line) "Yeah, well we were told that we really didn't need passports; guess our friends were wrong"
"Yes they were wrong and it could get you problems trying to get back in"
(Time to stay polite - this is your verbal admonishment from the inspector)
"Boy we sure will. Sorry about that"
"Just drive over there and park if you would (yeah it happens)"

...and once your names are in their computer you will (almost) always get sent to secondary as additional punishment even after you get your passports.

I have taken my mother-in-law across several times with just her CA. DL and yes they try to give you a hard time but it is what it is and then you move on. Have not been sent to Secondary once due to this, remember even to vote in the U.S.A. elections you don't need no stinken I.D., LOL. Nothing is ever as it seems my friends just the way this crazy world is. We have now put in for her passport but again never sent to Secondary.

Have also talked to so many people coming into Las Gaviotas with just their CA. DL also and none have said they have been sent to Secondary either. Take Care & Travel Safe " No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

But bear in mind por favor, different POE's, different agents, different MO's. Some younger men and women are still "saving our borders against stupid people without enough sense to stay out of Mexico". I've run into everything from a "Don't stop just mosey on through", to, darn near a "drop your shorts". Prime Directive for CBP is "Don't let 'em know what to expect".

Why take the chance? It's not worth the anxiety, sitting in line wondering how much of a hassle this is going to be, blood pressure climbing as you get closer.

In days of yore, before 9/11 I travelled quite a bit without a passport. Even to England and Europe. If you're a citizen they can't stop you coming back home, but you have to prove it and that's harder these days. I wouldn't dream of trying now.

I have been told that the old country can not deny you entry if you are a US citizen and can prove it. I have heard of people showing just a DL and some get waved on and some get sent to secondary.

If you are only crossing a few times, I would worry about it. They border folks prefer a passport or passcard but it is not the law.
