Mail in Ensenada - where the heck is it?
Some of you may have followed my saga trying to get a part to fix my truck so I can get back on the road.
I found some information on the package with the parts - but I'm not sure what it means. Sepomex's site reports:
31/08/2012 15:28:00 AP Ensenada, B.C. Puesta en ventanilla
What is Puesta en Ventanilla? Pickup window?
Next question - any idea where it is? I'm thinking it might, possibly be here in Ensenada but I am coming up blank trying to translate the sepomex
web site and google maps isn't too clear. Is there a main post office around here?
In a little bit I'm going to go drive around and see what I can come up with - any tips are helpful.

Indeed, 6 days by Correos de México desde Estados Unidos would be a new world's record.
Was it sent by UPS or DHL? If so there are several private companies that have offices in Ensenada. Check with the shipper how it was sent and get the
tracking info.
If by regular mail delivered to the main office in Ensenada, get your tracking number and put in the box at this site: track me here
It probably has the address of the Mexican Post office where it is waiting for you.
What is Puesta en Ventanilla? Pickup window? yep

The post office closest to the Riviera is on Lopez Mateos [first street] one block south of the river that runs to the ocean between the Hotel Sta.
Isabel and the Riviera Culture Center. ......on the south/west corner.
The main post office is on Juarez [fifth street].

The tracking page told me that the package was probably in Ensenada but didn't give me the address. Since this was beyond my telephone Spanish (I
can't make pitiful looks or wild gestures) I turned to the hotel receptionist who called around to a couple post offices and concluded that it was
probably at the SepoMex a few blocks way.
Yes, I have been sunning myself here in Ensenada, waiting for a box, that was in reality waiting for me, a few blocks up the road.
The office I went to is the one DENNIS described - it is at Lopez Mateos (1st) & Florestra. It's a pink & white building. For some reason, a
guy was sitting outside at a card table writing letters on a typewriter. Can't miss it.
Puesta De Ventanilla means "please come to the post office (if you can figure out the right one) so we can extort you for import duty." Almost 800
pesos. I didn't know what would happen to the box if I didn't pay I tried to ask but it was a communication breakdown. After I paid they gave me an
English receipt that showed it would have been returned to sender.
I started this trip with two birfields (front outer axles). I am now in possession of 1 original (installed), 1 original (broken), 1 junkyard
(installed), and two upgrades (in a box next to me).
It is amazing how incomplete information can cascade into a clusterf* of strangeness.
The best part is - the truck is only mostly roadworthy. I still have to track down a tie rod end & alignment. My gawd.

I just keep reminding myself what the chicken farmer told me when I started getting frustrated before - it's all part of the adventure. Right?

Nope, USPS Priority with delivery confirmation. Amazingly, once I found the sepomex site, the USPS confirmation number worked.

Yeah...that's his job. He writes for people who can't.
I havn't been in a Mex post office in years. I wonder if the customers still have to put their own glue on the stamps ???

i dont understand why you didnt just go north and get the parts when you are ONLY 2 hrs south of the border
priority mail to mexico isnt foolproof...express mail is
priorty mail is just like first class mail...it all goes in the same tub
the word "PRIORTY" just sounds better

Because my guy in the states talked me out of it. He'd shipped parts to México before and said it was no problem.

Typing letters for people in front of the post office is a good job in many Countries world wide.
I always thought it was great to see people dictating letters to their loved ones in front of the Mazatlan Post Office, where I had a PO Box for over
10 years in the 1970's.
And loved seeing it in my travels back and forth across Mexico in those years.
Don't see it in Mulege or Loreto. Thought it was non existent now.
Glad to hear this means of communication is still alive.

No doubt. I would have, or more accurately, I'd have taken BajaDock up on his offer to bring them down for me, but I let my guy in California talk me
into hanging out down here while he shipped them. Live and learn.

Yep. And - very likely - save 800 pesos in tax. Bus Ensenada-TJ will probably cost less than 200, return. You could ship it to the post office in SY -
or is it a private shipping center, don't remember - to be sure that you won't waste time Norte de la linea.

Indeed. Lots of interesting characters around Ensenada / Punta Banda. In related news, I finally made it all the way across that trail, this time
from the observatory road going north, and am again staged in San Felipe to start heading south. I'll update my trip reports thread after I find some
grub.
