Damn. That strikes home. I was at SDSU in 1975-6 before transferring to UC Davis. Gordon was already renowned for mapping in Baja. I tried to buy his volumes on Baja at an auction at a minerals exploration company (retiring partners..NOT due to gold price) in Reno several years ago.

My former roommates, all geologists at SDSU went different ways, I went precious metals and environmental, two went to grease (oil) and one to work under Gordon in Baja. So two of us had good careers.

Still as the former professors pass, it signals a change which is not pleasant to contemplate. There is still too much Baja and too little time.

What remains is the rocks...

The REAL mineral potential of Baja exists BUT has been plagued by Canadian listed scam companies who are running technologically appearing sophisticated scams on investors. The executives are the only ones who walk away with a profit. Baja loses if the scam advances to dirt moving/water decimating/permanent environmental damage before they ultimately go belly up and disappear.

Looks like Baja's underground metal resources will never be reasonably exploited in my lifetime, even the subsurface groundwater resources are being squandered for short term profit.

I hope the ocean resources can last a bit longer, but I know that Gordon would not be happy with the current situation.

Perhaps it was a good time to say goodby to good old Gordon Gastil.

Sorry to hear of his passing...didn't know him and I'm not much of a geologist but I have enjoyed using his maps of Baja geology I bought years ago(at the Map Centre).
