Matomi canyon "blocked" ?

I was reading a report of rock slide that makes it impossibe (except for a "rock crawler" type of vehicle) to pass through.

Anybody been there recently?

Where did you read this Jim?

The first time I drove the canyon was in 1978 and there was no sand in the narrows so it was rock crawling then for just that section... A few years later, sand had filled in and it was an easy drive (like when you were part of the group in 2004: http://vivabaja.com/204 )

I met a group at the top of the Diablo Dry Lake / Mex 3 on Sunday as I was washing down the silt with a couple Ice Cold Yellow Tops..They reported that Matomi was completely blocked and they had to turn around and back track out...

So the only way in is from Valle Chico on the north road? I wonder when was the storm that messed up the canyon road?

They tried to go through a few days ago.

Matomi Wash Update - race-dezert.com

Just giving everyone a heads up...Matomi is virtually a deadend. We attempted to travel east thru the wash a couple of days ago and had to turn around. Anything short of a rock-crawler won't make it. We thought we were following a couple of tracks in but they were actually one as he made a U-turn and back-tracked! It is the worst i have ever seen....very, very gnarly.

Jim - I have not traveled there, that was a re-post from Race Dezert. Yes, there had been rains there, but I do not know the quantities. I wonder what impact this will have on the SCORE races through that area....

Next month's Baja 1000 is NOT going down Matomi. It will be going south from San Felipe on the old Puertecitos road, then on the PAVEMENT where the old and new roads meet up, southwest of El Coloradito.

The hurricane has affected the southern areas of the race course but by the time the race runs the affected areas will be OK for the race. Heard there is a rancher stopping pre-runners in the area before El Cuarenta somewhere near RM650 give or take. I don't know the full story yet maybe he doesn't want anyone going thru until after Oct 26th when the course will be marked.

Where is the road blockage with respect to Rancho Matomi? How many miles from it?

If it is at the narrows, that is about 6-7 miles east of the ranch/oasis pool. Acess would still be open from San Felipe via the Valle Chico road.
