Shrimp price checking!!!
OK, what have you guys been paying for the large, blue, without head shrimps over there in Baja? They are up a bit this year to 120/kilo down at the
sales stands on Hwy 15 at Guasimas.
The crab is REALLY outstanding this year. Kinda medium lump; pure meat. Already lightly steamed in one kilo bags. Also 120 pesos.
Waiting for the waters to cool before I start buying ostiones and almejas. Probably December.

In La Paz camarones are 130p/kilo (ayer) and chocolate almejas are 2.5 centavos cada uno. Camarones vary from 110p to 140p.

Last week in Lopez Mateos - medium shrimp without the heads - beautiful and large - not as large as the blues - but still really nice - 80 pesos a
kilo.
Today at the market in Lopez - 100 pesos a kilo.

Shrimp prices? Just got back from the marsh country down south USA. Brought back 50 lbs. of shrimp. They cost $3.50/lb. and the heads were removed.
Baja shrimp are a tad more expensive.

Just read off 1 of the San Felipe sites, claims some
of the Mainland boats are coming over to the SF
area to to drag, due to the very good shrimping off

I think he meant peso's but I am sure you knew that. The shrimp would be small to medium at those prices, hardly compare to the blues Hook was talking
about.

Actually, I didn't since he was referring to clams rather than shrimp. [chocolate almejas]
But, had it been shrimp, I'd agree with you.

I hate to say it but when stuff floods and flushes into the gulf the shrimp go ape. In 1988 while a guest on the San Pedro IV, I saw a half dozen
shrimp that were so huge that I am afraid if I describe them here I would be ridiculed. Capitán Alfonso, said the cooperativa was under strict orders
to not part with shrimp of that size at any cost, anywhere. They were destined for México City, direct. Airplane from Guaymas to DF.
In Mazatlán I learned about "Cristales". Brown and white stripes. Not old, they come from brackish estuaries and lagunas. Netted from pangas not
barcos de camarones. Why they cost less is anyone's guess. When cooked, they stripe out orange just like the rest of them.
Try tossing in a heaping tablespoon of Old Bay Seasoning® while boiling shrimp. Then to get outrageous, add a 1/4 cup of shredded coconut. It's to
kill for.

Anyone want to carpool and camp and attend the San Felipe Shrimp Festival November 2, 3, 4? We can buy shrimp at the marina and have a shrimp
cook-off. I'd like to ride instead of drive, and will provide the margaritas. Split expenses.

I just purchased head on grandes (12 weighed 0.57 kilos) for 90.99 p /kilo at Walmart in Ensenada. Same shrmp without heads were 299p/killo and the
heads and sheel made some delicious shrimp stock for future use.

Around 15.00 USD off the San Felipe harbor.......as recently as last Friday.
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

ODD QUESTION:
Why do the markets sell shrimp with the heads ripped off?
They have better flavor if the heads are in place.
I usually have to go to an oriental mkt. to find head-on shrimp.

I dont know for a fact why they sell them with heads off but I belive that with heads off you have no way of telling how old they are. I personaly
try to buy them alive I think they taste better fresh.

For a Kilo. USD.
I only buy from the harbor areas.......not off some street vender that MAY be selling yesterday's catch.
Heads on...I agree. Best flavor just like the crunchy tails :-)

Yep, $15 U.S.
Bought a kilo in town and again from vendors that came to our beach house. Had surf and turf first night we were there, damn good!
Haven't had a bad trip yet....
