Motorcycle etiquite

Starting to plan a Baja trip on my 2012 Suzuki vstrom. I haven't nailed down the when or where yet. I've been driving to Baja for the past 20 years so pretty familiar with the roads. My question.....what is the etiquite for waiting at the border. Sitting on the bike for 2-3 hours just doesn't sound like fun. Is it OK to split the lane and go to the front?

When I use to cross on my bike ( and as I have seen many if not all others do) go inbetween the car lines and cut in as close to the gate as you can-I use to work in San Marcos and lived in Rosarito so this was a daily routine- good luck.

I don't know about waiting heading south, we've always just driven through. But coming north, I've been encouraged to bring the bike to the front of the line. I'll watch for the other answers to learn if this is OK heading south since I'm sure my luck will run out eventually.

Yes, that's the drill, just work your way to the front and cut in.

At Tecate I was directed by a vendor to drive down the left lane on the outside of the barrier and cut back across the barrier at the border, no problem, one guy actually held up a car for me to cut in.

When crossing northbound at San Ysidro make your way to the Sentri lane all the way to the right. You can squeeze your way on the right side of all the lanes between the cars and the curb. When you get close (within a few cars) to the crossing you can cut back to the left across the Sentri lanes between the posts into a normal lane. Usually the other drivers are cool about it.

Don't mean to stir up the pot to much but why are you special enough not to wait in line and make me wait that much longer becasue you are on a motorcycle?

I used to ride and would never think of cutting in front of someone who has waited because I thought I was above them. Now pulling up to a signal between cars is a little different as it does not make the cars behind me wait any longer.

If I was in front of the line at the border and a bike cut in front of me there would be hell to pay. If you don't like the possiblity of sitting in line for 2-3 hours I guess you can always stay home.

I actually find most people to be pretty courteous in the border line. Most people understand that a motorcycle rider sitting still is pretty hot and uncomfortable and most motorcycles start to overheat if sitting at idle for too long. It's not about being better than or above anybody it's just courtesy, most people get that. I guess I could turn it off and push it, might save me from getting my a$$ kicked by Howard.....

That is downright inhumane to expect a motorcyclist to balance a bike while clutching at stop and go conditions in the heat with full protective gear while sitting on an overheating engine and inhaling carbon monoxide from your comfy SUV for 2-3 hours. Staying home is not an option. Until there is a motorcycle specific lane we will legally ride to the front of the line. If it gets you riled up you can always stay home. ;D

Cause its legal to do, just like lanesplitting in Ca is. The hell to pay might be you being sent back to the end of the line if a Mexican cop catches you harassing a rider.
Might want to rethink

thanx folks

Thats what I thought, just wanted to make sure. Howard, you gotta find something else to do instead of giving someone "hell to pay" for not wanting to sit in line for 2-3 hours in protective gear and an overheating motorcycle.
I personally would look at the situation as, "gee, look at them, what an adventure they must have had. Lets bump them up"

"inhumane?" perjhaps inconvenient and uncomfortable, but not inhumane,... and there are always options! ;D;D

p.s. the SUV occupant is breathing same bad exhaust, SUVs are not equipped with supplemental oxygen supplies....

Closing it BEFORE a collision occurs.

Knew a guy who LOVED to do that.

It was funny.

I'm forced to laugh at a couple of negative responses to sending moto's to the front of the line.

I would have never attempted it if not told to do so, make that encouraged to do so, by the great folks in cars and trucks who knew I could do it legally.

Interesting to get a bad vibe from just a few on this board...

I've split lanes in California for 40 years, would feel uncomfortable doing it crossing the border, unless it was real hot.

Do I give-up my seat on a bus to a person who obviously is going to suffer a bit by standing? Well, Yes! And if you see me in line ahead, the space in front is always open to a scooter.

Dualsport riders as a rule have the added fun of standing on their tip-toes for a few hours while sitting on a 2 x 6!
