Baja 1000, 2012

Found the perfect spot to watch, end of a straight with a dip and a curve and best of all, no one around. Well, one pick up about 100 yds away, with 6 guys that were being towed to a ranch and the tow vehicle left them there when the tow rope broke, but that is a story for later. We set up camp about 3pm and feasted until about 9 and tried for some sleep. We were deep behind the ag fields near km marker 43. A green pasture full of beauty. The first car came by at 2pm, followed by a moto only seconds behind. The night was only slightly cool and the morning brought a slight overcast perfect for pics. More on my blog tomorrow along with pre run videos.

great pix
I remember several races where some chick alongside the road flashed us as we flashed past (so to speak)

your little ladies in the pix are a tad young for that maneuver...

One of the guys I was with at Cuesta Real in 2010 decided to solo the point to point race this year. He's still 30 miles out after an 8 am start yesterday.....looking pretty good for getting tagged in the silt by a Trophy Truck north of Scorpion Bay........check your photo's and let me know if you got him....this is his departure from one of the pits...:bounce:

Thanks for checking Richard. You really do take some first class photos.....

Matt finished around 12:30 last night... Oh dark thirty as I knew it in my youth. He completed 1140 miles with an average speed just under 30 mph and 40.5 hours on the course. I didn't make the trip as a chaser this year since I'd like to try another run south for Carnaval in La Paz. And we got an early snow storm last weekend, over 2.5 feet which really wrecked my large trees, they had not dropped any leaves. I've been chainsawing away and will fill a dumpster when they deliver it next week. Worst early snow storm in the 23 years we've been in this house. Snow totals were doubled by the very warm lake and "lake effect" results. Between the 'canes down south and the ridiculous storms up norte', I'm almost believing there might be some climate change......naw, my 85 yo dad says it's just normal cycles...:D

Here's a finish photo of 257x, the newest "IronMan"...I think he's earned that title...

Thanks for the compliments everyone. These were all taken with a 10 year old cool pix 995 with a slow focus _shutter. I had to find a mark in the course and press half way to set the focus there, then wait for the car to hit the mark and then continue the pressing to engage the shutter. sorta hit or miss, especially when you are also watching thru the screen to make sure the car is still on course and not heading toward you. Can't wait to get a nikon D7000.

Ironman is a winner, no matter what place he finished!

Willy, I'll try and post some maņana. I was at the pit at El Arco and saw many of these guys heading south. What a great reminder of human determination, ingenuity, jokes, seriousness, and truly being flocking(edit) alive.

The awards ceremony placed Matt #5 of ten solo moto riders completing the Baja Mil this year. This is an impressive accomplishment in the moto world.
