Turtle update

Turns out these hatchlings are a real big deal.

"Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles, which are the rarest sea turtles and are critically endangered."

That little Ridley sea turtle is adorable! Such a tiny critter finding his way in a great big sea...

Retraction

Before Getting too excited over the nesting success going on right now in front of Loreto Bay and Villas de Loreto, I went up a level among the local biologists to get corroboration of the ID "Kemp's Ridley", Lepidochelys kempii, provided by a non-credentialed naturalist and am informed that it is not correct. The turtles being extracted and processed from one or more nests in Nopoló the past few nights have been "Blacks" which is the local designation of the much more pedestrian "Green sea turtle" Chelonia mydas.

Still a very cool thing to be happening next to a golf course between 2 major developments. Maybe the event will clinch the discussion about protecting the strip of small dunes and wild grasses that border the beach. That the area is an active nesting zone for a species of international concern (IUCN Red List) is no longer merely conjecture.
