Enhanced CDL
I have just spent the last few days on the phone with the boarder control people, our US side. I was told the last time I came out of baja to use my
passport in the redi lane. It is the newer passport with the RFID hip that is in the documents that are approved..
Well after talking with several different departments no one could tell me why I can not use the new passport with the RFID chip embedded in it other
than because. I pay more for my passport renewal than it is for a passport card. I can get a passport card if I return my passport and wait the time
required to have both, a passport card with the RFID chip and my passport with the RFID CHIP. Seems a little foolish, I know I am dealing with the
government.
I was not told by the US border person I could not use the redi lane with my passport but the official position is it is not authorized. I guess I
just keep going out the redi lane until I'm told I am in the wrong lane. I do have my application in for the Sentri lane, much faster.
Just out government at its best. One more document.

For some reason, the chip in the passport book is different than the chip in the passport card. The chip in the book cannot be read by the electronic
readers in the Ready Lane.
Probably because the systems (chips & readers) were designed by two of the lowest bidders on the contract list.
If you do a Google search or go to the CBP ready lane page, there are FAQ's that explain the difference.
PS: It's border, not boarder.....there is a difference....

What's the point?
$4.5 million startup costs for DMV______________________________________________
Guess who pays for that?
________________________________________________
Only those eligible for U.S. passports could apply.
_____________________________________________
So why not just apply for a passport card?
_______________________________________________
applicants would pay an additional fee of $75
______________________________________________
So why not just apply for a passport card?
______________________________________________
Thorough background checks would be required
______________________________________________
More work for Homeland Security that now requires 6 months for a SENTRI pass

Agree with everything but your last point........where does it say the wait time is 6 months??? Initial applications for SENTRI that I personally
know of were approved in 6-8 weeks. Some have been quicker, some slower.
Even know of people who have been denied appealing and being approved.

I have no problem getting the passport card. But since I go down to my place in Baja about once a month I hate to go without a passport.. Means I
don't get my Baja fix. Either my Sentri application will come thru first or I wait till summer when I don't go South. No big deal. Been doing it
this way for many years just trying to speed up my border wait times as they seem to be getting longer and longer...

I thought they already have a enhanced license. When I renewed mine the last time it took about 6mos. for them to get it done they were having
problems with the system.
For a country that's says equal rights for everyone the spend a lot of money and effort trying to set up a Class system that is not equal.

I'm with you there, a Passcard without getting a Passport
is $55, I believe, lasts 10yrs., Enhanced DL, $75, I guess
would last the 5 yrs, typically given on a Ca DL.
I assume the only benifit would be convience of sorts,
maybe people would renew their DL's and get the
enhanced license at the same time. I assume the # of
border crossers with proper ID, like the new DL's
would go up, I remember reading border crossers with
proper ID was something like 65%

I would make sense to me to have the Enhanced DL. One less card to deal with and you cant use the pasport card to fly with.

Enhanced drivers license
I believe only 3 states have enhanced drivers license. Cal. is not one of them.

As of May 2009[update], Vermont, New York, Michigan and Washington were issuing enhanced driver's licenses and ID cards

From CBP site:
NOTE: The EDL and the ENDID are not valid for international air travel.

We werent talking about flying internationaly. I simply stated for me the enhanced dl. would be a better choice It would eleminate the need for a
passport card. I have had a passport forever.although I dont fly anywhere very often

I understand, not first hand, that one can get an fmm with the Passport Card,
do you believe it would be accepted at the TJ airport
to fly within Mex?
