Directions Algodones to San Felipe

I'm starting in Yuma and going to BOLA and thinking about crossing at Algodones and the taking 5 through San Felipe etc. I've never been this way. I usually cross at Tecate and then go to Ensenada and then highway 1 South but main destination is BOLA so I'm thinking crossing at Algonones and taking 5 might be quicker- better:?: Any thoughts? Can someone give me directions to get onto the road South to San Felipe - do I have to take 2 over to Mexicali? Also , is the last 41 miles to Chapala after the pavement ends - really bad or just go slow . I have a truck camper with some weight and don't like to wreck tires.

From Larry's email of yesterday:

"My wife and I traveled the Gonzaga route to our casa in Bahia de Los Angeles. According to our odometer we had 41 miles of unpaved road to Mex #1 at Chapala. We did the route in a cabover camper with no problems."

Let others advise you on the route, but as I recall them saying... the farm roads south (BC#3 & BC#4) are shorter, but the quickest route is the 2 and 2-D (Libramente toll road) west to Hwy. 5.

We take boats and travel trailers back and forth to San Felipe (Puertecitos) regularly and prefer the Algodones crossing to avoid the congestion of Mexicali. You have a couple of choices leaving Algodones, the quickest route to avoid towns, speed bumps etc is to stay left and proceed over Morelos Dam. Then continue south about 18 miles, thru one little town of Pachuca, to hiway 2 which is 4 lanes. Take 2 west to 2D, about 30 miles, it will be marked "San Felipe, Tijuana". Then you have a two lane about 7 miles to hiway 5, getting off to the right to the toll booth. Then you have to go right, back towards Mexicali about a half a mile to the turn around that lets you head back south. You will be picking up 5 at about the 10 KM marker and SF is at 190.

After crossing at Agodones you can take Mex 2 to Mex 5. Getting on to Mex 5 is a little confusing. After the tollbooth you have to go right going north on 5 and then make a u turn as best as you can to go south. (this is Mexico) After that it's clear sailing to SF.

Why not take 95 south out of Yuma to san Luise Rio Colarado and get on MX 2 there. Then follow Marc's instructions? Saves to 2 lane road from Algadones to MX 2

What about Sonora Hwy 40 from San Luis to Sanchez and enter Baja at Cohuila and the BC 4 across to Mex.5?

Well I take this and several other routes 2 or more times per month on the way to San Felipe. I will give you my suggestions in order of best to worst

Option 1.

I know you said you were in Yuma and this may be a way out of the way, but we take the new SR195 (Araby Rd.) from I 8 south and cross at San Luis. It is a great road and is about 21 miles total. Note: after 3 or 4 in the afternoon it can backup to get across the border.

Option 2

Los Algodones is ok for a couple reasons. 1. You miss the military check point on Hwy 2 just as you enter Baja. 2. The border crossing is usually very fast. Note: You have to drive very slowly and look out for the invisible hard speed bumps and the many small communities that you have to drive through.

Option 3

I8 through yuma to Hwy 98 to Calexico East crossing. You miss the I8 border patrol stop point.

On option "2", if you follow my suggested route, there is only one small town and a few speed bumps to deal with. Other than that you can go as fast as you want...
