Is there a Telcel store in Guerrero Negro or Mulege where I can buy a minutes card fro my phone ? Haven't used the phone (Nokia) in 4 years so might need a new Sim card and/or phone also.

there are Telcel stores all over the place ...look for the sign....and yes you will need a new chip. A real easy one is across from the Pemex coming into Vizcaino...it's huge and the girls are pretty helpful. I think you can get the same number.

To get a new chip you'll need to register it as your personal property by presenting Telcel with a copy of your passport which they will keep on file; suggest you xerox it ahead of time to make things easier as they may not do that in-office.

btw-- somebody please pipe up if you've experienced different-- you'll probably need to get your chip in a "Telcel main office" such as in Ensenada, San Quintin, Vizcaino, Sta. Rosalia, Loreto, La Paz, Cabo(s). For example, it cannot be done in Mulege-- I had to go to Sta. Rosalia main office which is located by the government plaza one block south of the main drag.

we had the Vizcaino store sell us our cell and install the chip with a copy of our CURP card (which I believe is the true requirement).

There are three or four Telcel shops in GN, where you can buy cellphones, minutes or sim cards.

The easiest to locate its right outside of Mercado La Ballena, half block before the big orange water tower.

Theres another on the corner before the gas station in the curve, its a big gray store with the sign: Tercer Milenio.

On the same side of the street some 50 meters to east, theres a Farmacia San Martin with a telcel distributor sign. Had some issues with them, they refused to reinburse what i´ve paid for a microSim number change... they couldnt do it, and offered me anything of the same value from the store, but in no way they would give my money back.

Theres another one two blocks before Mercado La Ballena as you enter town, half block on your right, i think this is the main distributor in the area (under the orange arrow).

There might a little shortage on microSIM cards for most of the new smartphones, but they can get i for you next day.

You can buy a chip at the dime store in Mulege. I needed a copy of passport and proof of residence, a copy of my water bill.

seems like every little town has a telcel store on every block. how does one know which is best deal, do prices vary? with so many stores in each town, do they compete and frequently drive each other out of business? any of the big box stores getting in on the game?
