We're going to be heading that way in February. Stops in San Quintin/El Rosario, San Ignacio and Loreto. Crossing somewhere around the 6th/7th in
Tecate.

Hey Islandbuilder,
Thanks for your replay. How many people, and how many vehicles in your group so far? What kind of pace/time frame are you planning.

Good Evening Surfer,
It will just be Mrs. Builder and myself, in our CRV. Our plan is to hustle to Loreto, spend a day ot two there and then on to pick up our friends in
Los Cabos. We'll then take a couple of weeks for the 4 of us to drive back to San Diego.
So, most of our exploring will be on the northbound leg.
What are your plans?

Hi Islandbuilder,
No schedule, plans or iten for the trip down; however once down there, I do plan to stay in the Cabo area for an extended period of time. I would not
want to do any nighttime driving, but hustling down (within the speed limits) is perfectly fine with me. Hoping to find even more travelers with the
same idea that there is safety in numbers.

Ha, just saw that you're in Encinitas, I grew up in Del Mar and we sold our place in Olivenhain before moving to the Pacific Northwest 25 years ago.
Although it is nice to travel with others, I don't think that it's essential for safety. Perhaps I'm naive, but I never felt uncomfortable in Baja, at
least once I get south of Rosarito. Any city anywhere gives me the shakes, but country roads aren't a concern.
I prefer to cross in Tecate, early in the morning, so that we can make San Quintin by early afternoon. We want to see some friends there, hence the
stop. If they're unavailable, we'll push on to El Rosario or even Catavina for the first night. Then to San Ignacio where I want to try and connect
with some folks.
Then to Loreto, where again, I want to spend some time with friends.
After that it's on to La Paz where I have a couple of meetings. We may stop there if our friends can find a flight into La Paz, otherwise we'll
probably just hit Los Cabos long enough to pick up our friends at the airport and then get out of the chaos of the Cape ASAP.
There are some nice breaks in town, with fairly mellow crowds as long as you share and are a pleasant addition to the line-up. When traveling I am
always aware that I'm in someone elses home water, and defer to them as much as possible. They have to put up with old pale guys like me all year, and
I feel bad for them. Just like when guys from Escondido showed up at Turtles.
Perhaps we can run together, or just stay in loose contact in case one of us has a problem? Either way is cool with me.

San Diego to Cabo
I am driving down in my camper in early March and would like to caravan if possible. I have driven the Baja around 20 times in both directions, speak
functional spanish and have a situational awarness born from experience in both the mainland and Baja. My dates are somewhat flexible as long as I am
in Los Cabos to pick-up my family by the 15th. Let me know if this works for anyone. Adios...Kevin

Hey Kevind, any chance you can move it up to Feb? My travel partner just backed out today, so I guess I am also looking for someone who might be
interested in pitching in for gas for a ride south as well.

We're leaving Mar. 1st (Friday), driving to the Mission Hotel near Los Pinos about 7 miles south of SQ. Next day to GN, but that's about as far south
as we're headed. See other post: "Caravan" by dirtbikr.
Two dirt roads diverged in Baja and I, I took the one less graveled by......

Crossing the 7th. First night in El Rosario, 2nd night La Bocana, 3rd night Loreto, 4th night La Paz.
I've got a couple of meetings en route, but we should still be able to hold this schedule.
We're planning a much slower return run back north after we pick up our friends in Cabo

The last couple of trips we've crossed both ways in Tecate. Last year we crossed south early on Sunday morning and there was no one in the visa booth.
We waited for hours and finally went on to Ensenada where we got our visas from the Port Captain.
Going north on a Sunday afternoon is a mistake, with a wait of a couple of hours.
So, we may try TJ this time. That said, it is a toss-up scenery wise. The Tecate valley route is beautiful, but it is always great driving down the
beach route as well.
Sorry, not a very clear answer. What are your plans?

I agree, the Tecate valley is lovely. I'm flexible on the crossing point. My camper, a 11.5' Bigfoot on an F-350 diesel is a pain in traffic but if we
crossed early it should not be an issue. I have not driven down for a while. Where do I obtain my visa?

The visa office is just before the customs area as you enter Mexico. The parking is on the Mexico side of the border, immediately to the right of the
customs area. The bank office where you pay for your visa is just north of the visa office.
The tough part, especially with a big rig, is to get to the parking area so you can walk in to the visa office. The street where the parking is
located is one way AGAINST you, so you have to go around the block. There are four or five spaces, but your rig will probably haang out into the
street a little.
As I said, we found the office closed on our last visit, with a hand written note on the door that the officer had gone home to eat, and would be back
soon. We arrived at 0730, so we assumed that he had gone to breakfast, and so waited for a few hours for his return. Then someone else came by looking
for the visa official, who told us that the note had been there since the day before. The bank guy was in his kiosk, and was pretty frustrated that
the visa office was closed, because taking visa payments was the only reason he was there.
At this point we bailed for Ensenada.
