Semana Santa Travel
if one wanted to avoid traffic/being on Hwy 1 during the "Semana Santa" time, what are the dates to avoid? I know that SS is officially the week
before Easter Sunday but that many people are traveling pre and post. are they on the road the Thursday and Friday pre-SS? and the week after Easter
ends?
I want to go the the USA and am trying to decide when to drive
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

My experience in the San Felipe area is, as you
posted, the week before Easter is SS, I've found
the IMPACT is the Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat, and
obviously Easter Sun.,
which all those days can, aside from
traffic, can have an abundance of INTOXICATED drivers, not just buzzed, but drunk. I've pulled into San Felipe
Mon., the day after Easter and found it almost empty of
visitors

yes captain4tuna has it wrong this time. The week to avoid is March 24 to the 31. Even the week after is not great if you need accomodation along the
way. All depends how much driving you have to do.
The grass is always greener....
and so, there is always a better spot in Baja

IMHO....SS TRAVEL IS BEST
If you travel as many days as possible before as you can...AND....as many days as possible as you can after it. It can be really crazy when your
closer to the weekends before and after SS!

we once took a trip to la paz during ss and had vehicle trouble. no place was open. it was terrible to have to sit for days and wait for the garages
to open (this was in the la paz area). since one never knows when trouble will hit, I recommend traveling after ss, so that, no matter what the
problem may be, at that time, ss will not influence the mechanic's time/availabilty to fix the problem.

Se entra en un estupendo estado de estupor el país durante la Semana Santa.
Even hotel clerks, maids, gas station attendants, and store employees "aren't really there"...their brain is on a sandy beach somewhere under the
shade of a palm frond restaurant, stuffing themselves with shrimp c-cktails, and cerveza.
Some cop somewhere, I believe it was Morelos, told me the accident rate increases "many many times" during the week. A lot of drunk drivers but a
surprise to me was when he said many accidents were caused by drivers falling asleep in being inattentive. Party 'till 5AM, then get blown out of bed
when the huge skyrockets start going off around 9 or 10. Brandy, or Cerveza, = Mexican sleeping pill.

My wife and I have driven north La Paz for the past 12 yrs. around the first of April. It's been our experience to avoid MX 1 the week before the
holiday; especially the weekend before. There are 1000's of cars heading south to the beaches of southern Baja, stacked high with camping gear,
pulling jet skis, boats and other beach toys. We've found that by waiting for a couple days after Easter MX 1 is pretty clear.
We live near a popular beach for camping and it seems that most campers are packed up and back on the road by early afternoon on Sunday. Safe
travels.
