Road to San Ignacio lagoon
There is a vastly improved paved road most of the way to San Ignacio Lagoon, but it's not indicated on the 2009 edition almanac.
The pavement begins just outside of town, continues about 20 miles, then it's world-class gravel, sand, washboard and narrow raised roadbed thru the
saltflats for the final 10-15 miles (depending on which camp you want to visit)
The pavement is new, wide, fresh and thru beautiful scenery.

The gravel/dirt/sand is also memorable

Floridian ugliness.\" (John Steinbeck, 1940, discussing the future of La Paz, BCS, Mexico)

Turn left just past the front of the mission, and go along the far side of the park, then keep going... as you climb a hill, note the Caminio Real
from Loreto veers off to the left (see it all on Google Earth)... and soon the new pavement begins.

They've been building this hwy for several years. It was there for about 8 or so miles for the NORRA 2010 race. They probably started building it in
2009. At 6 miles per year it will be done soon.
