Baja Cactus

Just finished the dreaded run to the border. One of the BIG disapointments was our stay at Baja Cactus in El Rosario. This used to be our fav in the Baja but, this time, the bathroom had a maximum stink going for it, we asked for a single bed room and were told none were available so we had to pay 450p but in the AM there were only 5 cars in the parking lot, we were told that the wifi had been upgraded - NOT. This place is no longer a great bargin or place to stay. Oh btw don't even think of eating at the resturant/plumbing supply place on the left about a mile east of the big turn. Dreadful!

weve been disappointed our last couple of times through also; solid mud in the entire parking lot, NO wifi in rooms, darker than the inside of a cow in rooms, etc, etc...downhill!...too bad, it was convenient.

Stayed there last week. No reservation and arrived late, only pet friendly room was one of the old rooms. I thought about making the dog sleep in the truck but decided to go ahead and get one of the old rooms. The dog wanted to get back in the truck.....so did I. It was cheap and classic "old Baja".....that's the best I can say about it.

With all the nice options of motels/restaurants in San Quintin, we never overnight in El Rosario. As a matter of fact, with a 400+ mile range in our last 3 vehicles we don't stop there for gas either.

We used to enjoy the tortas from the Bus though.

So sorry to hear bad reviews... Nothing lasts forever, it seems? Antonio is there more than before, so I don't understand why he is letting things slip (if they are)?

Funny that it is still being sold out, with so many other places to stay, if it is that bad? I hope it was not a new trend.

We have not stayed there since July, 2011... and it was as super then as it was my first time staying there in 2004...

24 hr. front desk, phone in room, Internet in room (bring cable, limited wifi too), satellite TV in room (with remote) with half the channels in English, coffee maker in room, pressure boosted showers, shampoo included, king beds, AC/heat/ceiling fan, dimmer lights... about $35-$45 price range (single/double)... hard to see anything bad here... plus the owner is a Baja Nomad who has done so much to assist travels and give hospitality to Nomads...

The Baja Cactus is the most over rated, over hyped motel on the Baja peninsula, at least on this site. For the same reasons stated by others on this thread, I have for some time chosen from a number of good options 45 minutes north in San Quintin.

There have also been complaints of being ripped off at the Cactus Pemex gas pumps, as well as general disgust at the banos.

In the past, complaints about both the motel and the gas station have been quickly drowned out by a chorus line of boosters armed with strings of photos.

It will be interesting to see where this thread goes.

Unfortunately I have to agree. The rooms "look nice" so many tend to make excuses for the shortfalls. We like the location because it is an easy days drive either from or to the border. We have been disappointed on our two last stays. We always make reservations well ahead of time getting our exact room reserved etc. Last visit the receptionist apologized but said they gave our main level room to a guest that had a" back" problem?????. We ended up with an upstairs room that required us to carry our older 50 lb dog to and from the room. Time before last the key wouldn't fit the lock. The head maid opened the door with her master key and said she would return with the right key. After waiting an hour I inquired at the front desk and was told they couldn't locate a good key. The receptionist said to leave the room unlocked when we went to dinner or walked the dog and she would try to watch to make sure nobody entered our room!! (The room was in the back and in no way visible from the office.) The Wi-Fi did not work at either time. We will not be returning. For those interested I did inquire at the adjoining motel (Espinosas.) When I asked if they accepted dogs he said definitely "small " dogs. When I showed him our 70lb golden retriever he said that would be fine!!!

Los Pinos station is north of El Rosario, but before you get to San Quintin. Going north it's on the lefthand side, on the corner of the road that goes to the old La Pinta hotel and before you get to the Los Pinos plant

North about 20 (or 30) miles.

Los Pinos is that huge agricultural complex with the pine trees (los pinos) lining both sides of the highway. Enclosed "hot houses" on both sides of the road for a mile or so, lots of worker traffic, semis waiting to load, tractors, etc.

The Los Pinos Pemex is near the south end of the complex. Huge, new, clean, parking area, picnic area, small lake. Very attractive.

Thanks for the Los Pinos intel....been there, just didn't have a name for it in my head....except "that's where we found Darren" (our lost moto rider on a day loop from El Rosario to San Quintin....).

I have enjoyed the Baja Cactus each of the three times I stayed there, but it has been three years as I have enjoyed other establishments in El Rosario.....

Sounds like the owner's shill on this forum should send a friendly message....so we could all still support Baja Cactus as the best in ER.

And just to morph the thread a bit ....I tried the food in the bus around the corner a few years ago and thought it was THE GREASIEST FOOD EVER....walked away from the food after several bites.....still wondering where a good place to eat is....but that will have to wait until my next trip in December....

Try the La Turista in the southern part of town. Simple accomodations & it's new. No jake brakes! Headin south I prefer to overnite in El Rosario. Cactus sells out quite often, too. $35us I believe. Tio

Turista Motel (~$30, new place and good mattresses is the place to go when Baja Cactus is full (and Baja Cactus staff refers folks there when they have no rooms), it is on the far southbound end of town, across from another nice place, but more $$, and that is Baja's Best Bed & Breakfast (and Bar/ Restaurant).

Just so others are clear, as mostly a motel is being discussed in this thread, Los Pinos is a Pemex gas station (not a motel), and a gallon or two distance north from Baja Cactus Pemex... which still is the southernmost Pemex before the 'empty center' of the peninsula.

We were at the Cactus last Thursday evening and have to agree with most of the comments....No WIFI ,Dark rooms...Made reservation on the way North on Sunday .No reservation on Thursday....The yellow restaurant, "Bajas Best" was excellent, if a bit spendy...Back in Mulege, no more trips north this year, Thank Goodness...

El Rosario is a drive through for us anymore and has been for quite a while. It is a very rare occasion that we stop there for anything ---

The south end of the San Quintin area is not that far away and for dog owners, Jardines is nice, but often full, especially their 'dog' rooms. The atmosphere around there is beautiful with all the gardens and the restaurant is good. Just a short jaunt off the highway on a dirt road.

Another great choice is old La Pinta, the Hotel Mision Santa Maria which is owned by Los Pinos. Nice rooms with ocean views, QUIET, good restaurant, very friendly and professional staff, good wifi and just a very calm nice atmosphere. Located not far off the highway and the road there is paved.

Great place to walk on the beach right out front, and for those occasional late night dog walks, there is a very large dirt parking lot. There is a security guard.

Just a comment about Mexican food anywhere in Baja. While we have found several sit-down places to be good, and lots of very good taco stands, the best Mexican food, IMHO, is on the mainland. The styles of cooking vary so much from region to region, and it is just real different and wonderful.

Since Antonio is a Nomad (?), it would be nice for him to check in here and address any concerns himself. Seems like a lot of business is starting to go elsewhere. I used to stop there every trip....not so much now.

Diana,
I agree....but mainland just doesn't know how to make fish tacos as good as Baja. A cooking show the other day suggested that Baja tacos are historically influenced by Japanese (fishermen?) tempura....and the guy had a batter recipe that sounded killer :light:

Baja's Best is a cool place....stayed there once for several days and had the single bed room....took about 10 minutes to remove all the cushions and pillows off the bed to crawl under the covers...

Fireplace made breakfast that much better...
