What is the legality and ethics of keeping fossils and/or removing them from country of origin?

I have some shark teeth and (whale ?) bone fossils about 23,000,000 years old from an area a mile or two north of Santa Rosalia....

It would be a shame for folks to enjoy the find and then "take only pictures"....which maybe really isn't such a bad policy.

I DID read the article....and thought that folks who won't read the article should be mindful of the issue. Any comment in the article regarding the issue identified in my query (i.e. legality and ethics) is left to the very last line and is the same as my comment above (it's in there ).

The article makes a point of identifying many of the places people can find fossils....which might have folks marking maps before they finish the article.

And folks like me might end up with stuff in their pockets....

The article is about Finding Fossils, not taking them...

Baja needs tourism, this is just another activity that may be interesting to overcome the fear of Mexico enhanced by our government and media.

Everything I've heard is if you do get caught by the Mexican side taking these fossils, you are in trouble. Historical artifacts the same.....INAH is pretty tough regarding things that belong to Mexico. That said, who hasn't walked off with some special little find.....I have a little plastic baggie by my bed with stuff from special places in Baja- a small smooth stone from the base of Sandia Mtn, a beautiful perfectly-shaped lengthwise stone that could be a someone's special pendant from historic Quini and some other items I won't admit to;).

We all have found cool fossils that sit in our homes.....but the Mexican rules are getting tougher. I won't say much more than this as I nearly got myself banned from a certain mountain range recently so I know NUTHIN':O

This is interesting, I thought. And then found out it's the same thing you posted here a few weeks ago. Except, now it's in a magazine.

What's the point here?

The Earth is only 6,000 years old. No fossils are 23,000,000 years old.

Sorry, had to let my inner troll come out.

Umm... nope, I don't think so, but I do a lot of writing about various topics in Baja, so it looks similar, perhaps? Sorry if I am wrong about that and you had to read it again, if it did.

The articles I write for Baja Bound I do on MS Word, and work on them a while... My Baja Nomad original posts I usually write off the cuff, or grab my books to share things while I am online here.

Now, after my Baja Bound story appears on Baja Bound's web site, through an agreement with Baja Bound, Baja.com posted some of my articles... then another San Diego news site gets in on the action!

I am so glad you posted this....if it was mentioned/posted before, I certainly never saw it.

Very interesting article .... I love seeing fossils. One of my students, years ago, gave me a wooden plaque filled with small pedernales. I guess if I ever move away from Baja, I will scatter them around La Bocana. Seems only fair to leave them right where they were found.

What amazes me is: Are there no cemetaries for those Indian tribes who lived in Baja ? Where are their bones?

Come visit La Bocana

I thought it was a nice little article David...I must have missed the thread before. I like how you ended it with take only pictures.

Fossil hunting is an enjoyable way to spend a baja day. It is something the whole family can do and is a different kind of baja activity then the usual fishing, surfing, beer swilling etc.

It gets people out hiking and seeing unique terrain and is educational especially for the kids who seem to take a new interest in archeology after seeing fossils in the wild. It can also be another economic generator for the local guides and service providers as it may keep people in an area another day.

kind of a coincidence that yesterday a local came over to show Kasheydog his collection of fossils (guess he didnt have a camera!) ...I had never seen such huge megaladon teeth and indeed Dick was inspired to see fossil valley on his next visit.

I wanted to read the article on fossils on Baja Bound but have been unable to link onto the article. All I get is a "pendiente" notice. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Shari, you didn't miss it before, because it is a new article, and this is the first thread posted about it... I just write so much about Baja places, it looked the same ****** as older posts, and I don't blame *** for being confused. I get confused over much similar things!

KasheyDog... GOOD JOB!!! Wow, after Baja Angel and I spent hours out there and found just a few 'baby teeth', I am very impressed!!

bacquito... the link to BajaBound's article should be direct, just click on it (blue text): http://www.bajabound.com/bajatravel/baja_fossils.php

BeemerDan... Thank you!

Are there any laws or regulations in Baja or Baja Sur regarding disturbing or removing fossils or artifacts????
