Safe deposit box in Baja?

All this talk of burglaries made me wonder about ways to protect valuables. En El Norte, I usually keep stuff in a bank vault deposit box.

Can you do that in Baja? Can a gringo on tourist visa open an account in a Baja bank?

Thanks,

Neil

It's fresh in the memories of Mexicans how the federal government took over all the banks, along with everything in them, in the early 80s. I doubt they would have that sense of security that a safe-deposit box should bring.

I've never even seen a vault in any of the banks around here, always wondered if they just drive the money around in the armored trucks you see everywhere.

Check with one of the major Hotels in your area. They all have boxes that they may rent out for long term.

I am with DENNIS.....

Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Banks here do have safety deposit boxes, and in the bank we deal with there is a wait list to get one. You cannot open a bank account unless you can prove you are living here, with utility bills in your name for example....
