Sittin on the Dock of the Bay....wastin time
this magnificent little blue heron's favorite spot was to sit on the end of the dock at Ojo de Liebre...which is a pretty cool spot to waste time!
until the whale watchers arrived....

The way I remember is by the sound of the name.
Curlew naturally drops as you sound out the word. In godwit the pitch rises from start to end.
Similarly the beak goes down in a curlew and rises upwards in a godwit.
This one should be a curlew.

the bird with the downturned beak is a whimbrel, me thinks...the "heron" is actually a "reddish egret", believe it or not...gorgeous pics!!

Shari, wonderful photos. It is amazing how the blue heron can hide it's long neck when standing still on one leg.
Love the sunset photo !!! Or, maybe it's a sunrise.

thanks for the nice comments...and while we are on the subject of birds this misty morning...here are a couple more from Asuncion...spring is
colourful with the pelicans red pouch attracting the ladies attention...and we had lots of Brandts geese here this season too which was unusual for
here.
have a great sunday all...I feel for all of you who attended the beerfest yesterday!

the great blue heron!
before baja I was a liveaboard in channel islands harbor. step off the deck in the middle of the night to use the facilities and find yourself eye
to eye with one of these nocturnal fisherman. let out a yelp and they take flight letting out the most obnoxious squawk you've ever heard.
but not before taking a humongous dump on your deck, quickly turning into cement.
god I miss em!

Birds
I think that long-billed curlew and reddish egret are the correct IDs. Also, not Brandt, brant. Used to be black brant, now just brant.

gracias tehag...I thought it was a curlew...the whimbrels are up in the pickleweed usually...and this guys call is unmistakeable...they used to wake
me up all the time when I lived just behind where this curlew was standing...at a full moon they were active feeding on the mud flats all night long
if the tide was ebbing at night...the lagoon is such a magical place...full of wonderful sounds.( dang those pumps though)
