Jan. 1974 by Tom Miller article and Baja Book preview

Tom Miller co-authored the 1974 new road guide 'The Baja Book' featuring the recently completed Highway One. Tom was a writer for Western Outdoors magazine and promoted his new book with this article on the new highway. A flyer to order the book was included... and after nearly 40 years, I still have these in my collection, so I can share with you.

(Guerrero Negro is spelled correctly in his book, and the giant rock illustration caption should read 'north of Santa Ines')

I hope you are able to read the text okay, if not, let me know and I will try to help.

Classic article and subsequent books! We started exploring Baja in the late sixties using only the Auto Club book and maps. Half the time we just took the road to the beach?! Tom Miller and others made us dream of new places and other pursuits besides surfing. What an adventure it has been. Tio

Yup, Tom was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the new highway. We got to know each other, camped, and shared stories. His wife at the time (Shirley) introduced me to the girl who would become my first wife while we all were on a Mexico West camping party (1984)...

I was quite a bit younger than Tom when the highway was built. My guidebook on the completed Hwy. 1 came out a year after his, but my first little guidebook I self published was out a few months before! It was about the highway still under construction (July, 1973), so it soon was outdated! It was a fun experience and it appeared on TV in San Diego and in the local paper.
