The weight of obsession,What we can learn from anglers who have crossed the line between passion and addiction.
James Hall
While at the dentist office this morning I found this page in a outdoor mag. had to have it so I ripped it out and stuck it in my pocket,I knew you
guys would like it as well!
Sometimes a fish gets in your blood. There's something about its personality, the challenge of catching it,that not only speaks to your soul
but swims through it.It leaves in its wake a clinical obsession to keep that connection alive,no matter the risk or sacrifice.
Fisherman with this disorder are, admittedly, plagued. But what a sweet disease. To a man ,they believe their lives have been altered. They did
not choose to be this way-the fish chose them.
To abuse one's body as well as one's equipment in the pursuit of that ultimate hook-up is acceptable.

Anyone can catch fish in a boat but only \"El Pescador Grande\" can get them from the beach.
I hope when my time comes the old man will let me bring my rod and the water will be warm and clear.

I had a Cortisone shot in my left elbow, 2 days ago. {Cortisone flare was
really bad this time} 8 days before we leave for our trip down the long bumpy road.
I can only hope for a deep burning pain in both arms that only a big fish can bring.

:lolain, needles, dope and you want more of the same in the other arm,hmm sounds
serious,surely some sort of addiction.
We fisherman are a strange lot we spend large somes of money,go without sleep, get sunburn, tear up our equipment, drink to much some
times, and we look forward to doing it again and sometimes never catch anything? and to top it all off we tell others what a great time we had

It does sound like a mental disorder.
I guess the question is whether to spend a couple of hundred dollars a day on fuel to indulge this pathology, or a couple of hundred an hour to a
mental health professional to pursue a cure.
Some choices are just harder than others.......

I think fishing is a lot like gambling; that payoff keeps us going regardless of how much we're in the hole.
Now, most fishermen I've met are slot-players, doing the same routine year after year and getting the occasional jackpot.
Others are Blackjack card-counters, applying themselves to maximize the odds.
And then there's the cheaters...

For me, just sliding the boat off the trailer in the predawn calm is my drug.
The sound of the pee hole peeing can be heard, the rush of water to the bait tank and the perfectly smooth engine purring is pure magic...
The little stresses of FM-2 or permanent status cards or the amount of the CFE bill is quickly vanished and I fall back into "it's the way it is" mode
quickly.
My luck lately is more boat ride than catching, but for me.....it's all good!!!

Hey Bill,
That would be a pretty juicy grand slam for one day. I would think if anyone has done it in Loreto, it was probably you.
We did pull a huge bull dorado, a #180 marlin and a #100 sailfish on the day of the 1991 solar eclipse. It was memorable.

This gets back to the question of why we fish. Thomas McGuane came closest to the truth by stating that it's not what it appears to be. This is him on
fishing for permit.
----------------
What is emphatic in angling is made so by the long silences - the unproductive periods. For the ardent fisherman, progress is toward the kinds of
fishing that are never productive in the sense of the blood riots of the hunting-and-fishing periodicals. Their illusions of continuous action evoke
for him, finally, a condition of uttter, mortuary boredom. Such an angler will always be inclined to find the gunnysack artists of the heavy kill
rather cretinoid, their stringerloads of gaping fish appalling.
No form of fishing offers such elaborate silences as fly-fishing for permit. The most successful permit fly-fisherman in the world has very few
successful catches to describe to you. ... Even the guides allow enthusiasm to shine through their cool, professional personas. I once asked one who
specialized in permit if he liked fishing for them. "Yes, I do," he said reservedly,"but about the third time the customer asks, 'Is they good to
eat?' I begin losing interest".
--------------------
Many of us have gone through the obsessive-compulsive stage of fishing. The problem is that it's a bit one dimensional in that the nerves and hormones
block out everything else. It's an adrenalin rush. Like any drug that's enjoyable you go back to it again and again. It's a high.
Many of the great naturalists start out as fishermen and move on. Ansel Adams spent most of his early years photographing the sierras with a
fishermen. There is much more to fishing than 'the fix'.

Gar Un Teed Fishing System
Warning
For Professionals Only
This system is not for the casual angler. It is not some cheap new gadget or lure that claims to entice more fish to bite. The system is for
Professionals Only. The price of the system is $2,100 U.S. and consists of a set of 10 CDs, 7 fishing devices (lures), 3 pieces of fishing equipment,
10 nautical maps, 3 reference books and 120 Fish Oil Capsules. All of the components will include free shipping in the U.S. and Mexico, are
water-proof and glow in the dark.
Most of our clients are big time tournament players who buy almost every new product that comes out to enhance their chances of winning (catching
fish). Now is a very good time to buy because we are thinking about raising our prices to get more money from rich, spoiled Bisbee types around the
world.
The system unlocks the mysteries of salt water fishing like no other program in the world. You will learn the answers to so many questions it will
have your head spinning.
1. What is water temperature and why should I care about that?
2. What is salinity index and why shouldn’t I care about it?
3. Just what, if anything, does plankton and phytoplankton have to do with fishing?
4. Why must I learn the Mayan language to read the book about tides?
5. Why do I have to take fish oil capsules?
6. How can I avoid doing the six months of fishing muscle exercises?
7. Why should I learn culling by long-line release?
8. What is a soft gaff?
9. Where can I buy oxyacetylene for the program’s line splicer? Won’t the airlines have some restrictions on oxy and tanks I’ll need for that part of
the process?
10. Is it legal for me to sell marlin meat on Ebay? How efficient is your meat storage and shipping facility? Isn’t $11 a pound for storage and
shipping a little steep?
11. Why does your guarantee say I can “get some of my money back” if I’m not completely satisfied?
12. Where were the guide and deckhand profiles for tipping developed?
13. Do you have some special arrangement with Sam Adams beer company? Why must I drink just that one kind of beer when I fish?
14. Can you explain in more or better detail what the Slumps entail? The word appears several times in your guarantee agreement and I would like to
know why.
The whole program will be drop shipped to the address you provide within 90 days of payment. Since the amount of payment is too large for Paypal and
we don’t accept checks, you’ll have to deliver the cash to the below address (my house). Please include an additional $88 U.S. to avoid a lifetime of
spam from fishing gear sellers from all over. Believe me when I say it is money well spent unless you just get a big laugh after being sent 10,000
Walkin Worms COD.
