I knew it...I knew it!

David had misled us all here for years. There is no Shell Island.

It's Shell Peninsula!

Outstanding pictures, Ken. Thanks for posting.

Classic small "barrier Island" similar to the many such "islands" along our USA eastern coast.

The first year that Carlos Fiesta produced the Baja Calendar (after taking over from Baja Calendar creator Marv Sherrill), it featured Charles Chandler's photos... 2010 Calendar.

Before he finished producing the 2011 Calendar, Carlos Fiesta (Chuck Chambers) and two of his friends died when his plane crashed in Newport Beach, while returning from the Baja 1000.

Marv Sherrill stepped in and finished production and distribution of the 2011 Baja Calendar in memory of Carlos Fiesta.

Laguna Percebu was the tourist camp name until the recent change to Rancho Percebu (seems that there is a tax reason, as many of the campos added 'Rancho' to their names).

Originally (1960's) it was a fisherman's camp, just called Percebu. There was a deserted ranch 1 mile from the beach called Persebu (per the Lower California Guidebook, 1962).

The lagoon is created by Shell Island, and is shown on maps as 'Estero Percebu' on topo maps. Oddly, the back-bay/ lagoon, behind Bahia Santa Maria, 5 miles south, is called 'Laguna Percebu' on the government map.

Here is a photo from about 1978 at Laguna Percebu camp, that was a gag display using bones, bras, and tequila bottles showing it wasn't good to drink and fly!

Looking north towards Percebu, over the lagoon, from the dunes, on Shell Island:

shell island, barrier etc.

does anyone know who owns the land that must be crossed to reach it or who owns the beach area?

It seems this will eventually be off limits like many other areas are becoming south of San felipe. I don't blame the land owners for trying to get some $'s out of their property.
