Weather and Road Report Mulege to La Paz

It's been raining in Baja and when the skies open up they can slam down rain with the best.

It's so green now on the hills that the rough, jagged mountain peaks between Loreto and Insurgentes look like Kauai and Scotland.

A first: Waterfalls - lots of 'em!!

A personal first: drove my 2-wd Toyota PU through two running arroyos south of Loreto, just a mile north of the turnoff to Puerto Escondido. First through was a cop pickup, then a full-size bus. Then I went. It was a trip!

Caution is advised while traveling Baja right now.

You'll encounter unannounced rockslides in blind curves.

There are lots of cows eating the grass on both sides of the highway.

You can be driving along in sunshine, turn a curve and drive right into a downpour for 2 minutes, then drive right out of it. It's so weird you bust out laughing.

Many arroyos and dips in the road are still full of rocks and rubble from prior washes of a couple weeks ago. They're as cleaned up as they're gonna get. You've gotta drive slow enough you can slow down quick when you need to.

Watch out for unmarked washouts, undercuts, road work, and rivers of mud running across the highway.

What generally takes 6 hours took us 9 hours today.
Drive so you can react fast. Ya' never know when, but you're gonna need to for sure.
Be safe and enjoy this dramatically beautiful time in Baja Sur.

I love it when the butterflies come out in mass....and before them, the herds of caterpillars crossing the road.

Also a fun time is picking all those errant butterflies out of the radiator fins!!

Rain baby rain!!....the desert breathes new life once again.
