Gonzaga Bay, Bahia de Los Angeles, Punta Abreojos, Ascuncion
Just back back a couple days ago, after a couple weeks in our favorite haunts. Crossed the border in Mexicali in the morning, easy getting the visas
stamped and getting our pesos. Made it to Gonzaga Bay that afternoon, as much as I like the new road, I sure miss the "journey" of the old one!
Stayed at Campo Beluga for two nights and had beautiful windless days. Kayaked and got fish for dinner one night, had dinner at Alfonsina's the
other.
Went through Coco's, dropped off cat food and oranges. I thought the road out to Chapala was as bad as I've ever seen it, very slow going! Got to
Campo Archelon on Bahia de Los Angeles and stayed for many days in beautiful hot weather with very little wind. Kayaked our butts off, did a whale
shark trip with Marcos, and enjoyed Antonio's hospitality as always. A young family from Ensenada we met last year arrived, it was great to see them
again, and our camp neighbors were a delightful couple with two little kids from Victoria. Ended our stay there with Antonio providing a big yellow
tail for a camp barbecue and Herman Hill, author and gold miner, came out and enjoyed drinking some beer and wine with him!
Went on to Punta Abreojos and stayed at Campo Renee for a couple nights. As always, had a great time although the tides weren't in our favor for
fishing the estuary. Beautiful weather there too! We drove up the coast to La Bocana, had a beer at the new Bocana Adventures, and continued up the
coast to Ascuncion. Road was a bit on the washboard side but not too bad. Stayed at Sherri's camp for a night.
Our last night was in San Quintin, at Don Eddy's - glad to see the place is doing good. We have always had a soft spot for Don Eddy's as on our very
first Baja adventure many many years ago, it was our first really fun day on our way south, with Don Eddy himself passing out margarita coupons in the
parking lot and a sea food pig out that was epic (we affectionately called him Fast Eddy as he was such a hustler!) The new restaurant is certainly
more modest, but was delightful and the margaritas were great!
Ate our last Baja meal at the carne asada taco stand in Francisco Zala, crossed the border at Tecate after an hour wait, and got far enough north that
we had to abandon shorts for cold weather clothes (boo hoo).
Great trip, can't wait for the next one!!!!

Great photos!
Thank you for posting. Sounds & looks like a great trip.
How do you like your popup camper? Was it tough installing those kayak racks? Any leaks?

Haven't seen the reconstruction at Don E. since the fire shut him down a few years back. Good for him. Will have to check it out next time.

Don Edies son runs it now but he lives in Chula Vista (I think that's what he told us) and he subs the restaurant and bar each to others. Nice guy at
least when we saw him a year ago.

here's a story from a WON staffer a while back.
SAN QUINTIN BAY — Heriberto 'Don Eddie' Marquez, proprietor of the popular Don Eddie's Landing in San Quintin, suffered a heart attack that left him
in a coma and passed away several days later on Sunday, Jan. 6 from the cancer he had battled for the past year and a half.
The 78-year-old Don Eddie is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lolita, and his son, Tony Marquez.
Growing up in Southern California, Don Eddie studied to become an ordained minister. Later he worked in the Aerospace industry for both Ducommun and
Boeing, after which he moved to Sonora, Mexico to farm.
Over the years he took his son on annual fishing trips and after they visited the San Quintin area, they found it to be ideal and returned as often as
they could. A decade ago, when the opportunity to purchase Ernesto's Hotel arose, Don Eddie couldn't resist. The property, located on a dirt road next
to the Old Mill Hotel about three miles west of town, was the perfect place for fishing and hunting.
Don Eddie changed the name to his own and began improving the rustic 17-room hotel, fulfilling his dream of having three cruisers at his disposal
which allowed him to fish whenever he wished.
Being the 'Jefe' suited him just fine, and he eagerly greeted his guests. Over the years, he formed many friendships as more and more fishermen
discovered his beloved hotel.
As the news of his death reverberated on the internet, messages of respect and condolences appeared: "A legend has left us." "He will be missed by all
who were lucky enough to stay at his place and enjoy his friendship." "He left his mark on San Quintin that will remain forever!" "Don Eddie was
always ready to offer help with a big smile."
An era has surely ended and our prayers and sympathy go out to his family in this time of sorrow.

The restaurant in no longer the beautiful 2-story building, that is now a kind of open patio area, and the restaurant is just off to the south of the
old one, more like a glorified palapa, but we like it. The guy that waited on us was the same guy who has been there for many years. It's still our
favorite San Quintin stop!!
We will forever miss Don ("Fast") Eddie.
