Pemex ... FAIL

Post your pictures of Pemex fuel locations, long deceased.

Somewhere, southbound, before El Marmol.

Service with a snarl.

I remember that station when it was "open" for business.

There was a really tough guy and an equally tough-lookin' woman selling gas out of cans there about 30 years ago. When I paid, he pulled a huge wad of big-azz bills out of his jacket and rifled through 'em looking for the correct change, both of 'em keeping one squinty eye on me and the other scanning the surroundings.

Yes, I got the correct change, but no matter. I was happy to get out of there and on my way south.

That station at San Agustin was in operation when the highway first opened but didn't last long.

OK... well as Kurt said, the first one is San Agustin... a mini parador from 1974 that was a Pemex, Trailer Park and Highway Maintenance facility (across highway from gas station and trailer park). It was open only a few years. The trailer park was operating recently however. The maintenance facility was also abandoned. The original San Agustin was a ranch and well (source of drinking water for El Marmol residents) and is located out-of-sight of Hwy. 1, just north, over the hill.

The 'Near Catavina' one I can only imagine is the abandoned Pemex at (Nuevo) Rosarito? Some help please?

In the photo sequence it shows up before the next photo in Catavina. The cactus is what impressed me. It could be quite a few miles N/o Catavina because the photos before are already in the boulder fields, after this photo where the race crosses Highway 1.

I believe the "near Catavina" is the old Parador across the highway from the Hotel there. If the photo could pan to the left it would show the La Enramada Rest. There is no other old Parador/Gas Station like that between San Quintin and the BOLA junction. When new those three were were lovely with inside seating around the little rock/cactus garden but unfortunately there wasn't enough traffic to keep them going. Planning was a little over optimistic. I took a little rest break there on my recent ride North.

Kurt,

Right you are. If you squint, you can make out the roof line of the old Pemex above the gas cans.

OK, at Catavia then... that is pretty near! The big cardon was indicative of Catavia, but I thought the old station was occupied by other business or people... the photo is at such an angle, you don't see all the additional stuff since it was a Pemex. The first time I bought gas there was April, 1974... and there were long lines! I took photos, but they are slides... :(

Some reasons why the central Baja Pemex stations all failed was...

1) The remoteness for potential employees, distance to banks, and high risk of theft.
2) The higher cost to operate in such locations with the refusal of government Pemex controllers to permit operators to make the same profit as Pemex operators do in cities, by adjusting the sale price per gallon in remote locations.
3) The pocketing of sales cash by the ejidos (who owned the stations when the highway was completed), instead of paying for new fuel deliveries from the fuel sales.

There are several reasons why those Pemex stations failed. First and foremost is the fact that Pemex franchises their stations. The ones in the photo make it fairly obvious that back in the day, as opposed to today, there was nothing more than gasoline sold. The flurry of recent Pemex openings seems to always include a convenience store, where the franchise owner makes more money inside the store than out at the pumps.

Ateo, I gassed up there regularly during 2010-12.
Skipped it this trip for the toll road.
What happened?
