Tijuana hospital gets $1 million gift

TIJUANA ? The Colonel Harland Sanders Foundation has committed $1 million to the Hospital Infantil de las Californias, which provides medical care to children on both sides of the border.

The donation will help fund construction of a 40,000-square-foot expansion of the hospital that will include three operating rooms and 35 hospital beds. Approximately $10 million is needed for the project.

This is the foundation's first donation in Mexico. Half of it was presented last week to the Foundation for the Children of the Californias. The other half will be donated in April.

Supported by foundations in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Hospital Infantil de las Californias provides ambulatory care in 40 specialties to children under 18 at low cost. Patients typically come from low-income backgrounds and don't have insurance.

Since it opened in 1994 as a 2,000-square-foot clinic, the hospital has seen 140,000 specialty medical cases such as club feet, crossed eyes and cleft lips and palates.

"All of these children get left behind because they're not emergencies, but without treatment, they're not going to be productive citizens," said Dr. Elizabeth Jones, co-founder of the hospital.

That Hospital is already doing very well, so the 1 million gift will give it a plus when it comes to saving childrens lives.
