Todos Santos Bypass open

For those of you coming to Todos Santos - The new bypass road has just been opened. The part of Hwy 19 that used to go into Todos Santos from Cabo is closed at the intersection of the new bypass. To get into Todos Santos you have to take the bypass and then when it comes out again North of TS you take a left to get into TS. It is now the only way into TS.

Coming from La Paz, you can still go straight into Todos Santos but you have to go back towards La Paz and take the bypass road to go south to Pescadero or Cabo.

They are redoing the southern exit road from Todos Santos so no telling how long that part will be closed.

Thank you David! Most everyone is used to coming into Todos Santos from the North and then leaving out the south route so I wanted to give everyone a heads up. I'll let the board know when the southern route is open again.

They only made the bypass 2 lanes but it looks like there is room for them to put in two more in the future. It sure beats the heck out of driving on that awful temporary dirt road where 18 wheelers where getting stuck practically every day.

Progress! Yay!

We just went south from La Paz to Todo Santos and Cabo and had to go through Todo Santos as the bypass was closed - this was Monday.

And returing from Cabo to La Paz on Tuesday, going north, the by pass was not open and we had to to through Todo Santos again.

And yes, they are working on the road going south out of Todo Santos to Cabo - is a construction nightmare again, but nothing like the highway at the Cabo end. It is really a snarl.

So I think maybe sometimes the by pass is open and other's it is not depending on what they are trying to get finished up on it.

JMHO.

It just opened on Thursday and is definitely not a "sometimes" thing. I don't know how long the Southern exit from Todos Santos will be closed, but they have been working putting in the re-paved and re-vamped road for about 6 weeks. They closed off all access to it Thursday.

@Katiejay99 - thank you for the update. My wife and I will be coming to Todos Santos in January and definitely appreciate the head's up. I'm guessing that the status of the southern entrance to Todos Santos will change from day to day, so it makes sense to be prepared for detours at any time.

Is this only for passenger cars? I mean, there must be a dirt road out of Todos Santos to the south, other than Hwy. 19 (old or new)? Sounds like a castle with a moat around it?:o

As of yesterday, the only way out of TS to the south, for cars and trucks, is the new bypass road. It's actually pretty sweet, a hell of a lot better than the cluster flock of a detour with semis traveling at 5mph, that they had previously.

was on it south yesterday and it is sooo sweet.

Also noticed a new road being cut in before you reach cabo that (pure speculation) is going to cut across to COSTCO would be my uneducated guess to relieve traffic. I will start a rumor thread

Is this "by-pass" road paved and suitable for a heavy road motorcycle?
Are there any areas that are loose gravel and should be avoided while on 2 wheels?

The new road as you enter Cabo from the north, will be a toll road that bypasses Cabo completely it will let out at the toll road from the airport. We can't wait for this. Should cut 30 minutes from trip to airport. No more nightmare getting thru Cabo!

The new bypass is a newly constructed, fully paved 2 lane road.

Not everyone knows that the southern exit from Todos Santos is closed off for now so still lots of vehicles and big trucks having to turn around and head back out towards La Paz to connect to the bypass.

Because it is new there are no restaurants or minisupers at all along the route.

In a perfect world, development of minsupers and deluxe condos would take place along the pristine, 2-lane bypass, leaving Todos Santos intact as a quaint little pueblo. "You might say I'm a dreamer..."

I have heard that the old road south of Todos is open again. On Friday there was a major multi-vehicle accident on the new bypass road.

A reminder to please drive carefully where ever you are through the holiday season. For some reason, we find ourselves in a rush to get from point A to point B during this time. Cuidate.

I went to Baja Beans for the market yesterday and took the bypass, assuming the southern route was still closed going out of Todos Santos. Boy was I surprised to see cars coming from that route when the bypass connected again with 19 (well, they are calling the bypass 19, so I guess the connecting will now be called something else).

Returning from Baja Beans I actually got go on the new road which is the entry/exit from the South. SWEET!!!

Also, re: wreck on the bypass road: The bypass road is only 2 lane and there are few places to pass the big rigs safely. I can understand how wrecks would happen.
