san felipe to la ventana

hello,

I'm caravaning with friends from colorado to san felipe the end of feb and then will be traveling from san felipe to la ventana, just south of la paz. i'm planning on heading out to the 1 at chapala and continuing down that way. anyone have recent update on the gonzaga-chapala road?

would love any info/recommendations for trip itinerary. i'm a solo female driving a subaru (with my dog) so will probably seek out hotels and make my way steadily south.

thanks so much for your time and knowledge!

Heather
Welcome to the board. I just drove the road from San Felipe to Chapala on Saturday. The road is paved from SF to Gonzaga and they are working on the road and getting ready to pave it to the Pemex at Rancho Grande. Should be done soon. The rest of the road to Chapala was a normal graded road, some places you I could go 30 mph and some places only 10 mph. Took me 2 hr and 20 minutes to Chapala.
Have fun on your trip.

Welcome to baja nomad! If you have extra time on your hands, I recommend stopping by Bahia Asuncion on a Saturday and joining the gang there for fish taco lunch at Ramon's and then making your way south and joining us for lunch on the beach at the Cabanas restaurant any day after that.

We are on the Pacific side. Trips to Baja are all about a little adventure.

Welcome. I would check some of the many posts concerning that road and how to deal with it after Gonzaga. It is not 4x4 but it is indeed rocky and needs some slow goin. Stop by Coco's Corner for a break. If at all possible and you have room, bring an extra spare tire..."if" you have room! (you'll get all kinds of advice but I believe in this one.) If out of San Felipe and you are winding down (and Guerrero Negro seems too far) as to hotels you may want to take the side trip to Bahia de Los Angeles...plenty there to choose from and you can see some beauty and relax before heading south. (some of this based on whether or not you are in a hurry...or have time to explore a bit.) Please report back as to your travels !

Hello Heather, Welcome to Baja Nomad. I noticed that you will be travelling with your dog (also my favorite travel companion)! If you use the search feature of this forum you can look for dog friendly hotels in Baja. I know I've seen a couple of threads on here about traveling with dogs. Have a fun trip!!

Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!

Hola Heather

Welcome to BN...I would highly recommend you plan on car camping more than hotels...its just how Baja runs..if you stay in hotels you will not get a taste of the Baja gig IMO....a good coleman 533 stove and a bit of cookware with a good sleeping bag will open many doors for you in Baja...waking up on a nice beach is something no hotel can offer!! have fun....K&T:cool:
