Cans of wasp spray work as well if not better and shoot farther and are perfectly legal everywhere! I'm bringing two on my trip next month to baja to keep in the trailer.

Wasp spray

Wasp spray used as personal defense is not legal...it is an insecticide and a poison......federal law prohibits the use of any pesticide in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. That means it's a felony to use it on a person.

Read all about it:

http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/waspspray.asp

Granted it may not be the best weapon to use but absent of the ability to own or travel with a gun or pepper spray it is an option for self defense. It is a ludicrous argument to tell someone that because a label says "not for use on humans" and that they should suffer great bodily harm if that's all they have.
You really want to say that if you hear a knock on the door at midnight and then the door is busted in that you would read the label and wouldn't use wasp spray to protect yourself if that is all you had?
It is perfectly legal TO OWN even where a gun and/or pepper spray is outlawed. To use it in defense of ones life may very well incur an investigation by the authorities but you would still be alive. Was it used as a defensive weapon or was it unjustifiable use of force as an aggressor? Just as with using a gun, a knife or a baseball bat in self defense, you will have to prove your position on using any weapon.
A spray can of automotive brake cleaner will also incapacitate an attacker if hit in the eyes but its range is much less than wasp spray and it also has "health" warnings for improper use.
Having had bits of both wasp spray and brake cleaner in my eyes I can attest to their effectiveness.
The idea is to incapacitate an attacker with anything you have at hand and get the heck out of there and get away. When faced with over whelming or disparate force anything you have can be used in your self defense.
I used to teach flight attendants how to use what they had available in the airplane for their self defense should the need arise. A pot of very hot coffee is a great short term weapon as is the steel coffee pot top edge when used on someones head! It makes nasty cuts on the skull. BTW, it's not designed for use on humans either!
I'll have wasp spray with me in my TT in Mexico rather than risk any questions about why I have pepper spray. As I can't conceal carry down there, I also have a knife and a machete, I'll use anything I have at the proper time.
As always your mileage may vary, your choice, live or die!

I'm far from an expert on Mace. However, the reason we have it is we walk our dog late at night in Colorado. One night a sheriff approached us to say that there had been a few problems in that area and he suggested it. He recommended that we get a spray sold at a local police supply store. The spray recommended was a combination of pepper and another ingredient. He said that some people can handle pepper but nobody he knows can handle both ingredients. The spray is colored and is very difficult to wash off etc. He said to empty the container in the facial area of the attacker and the attacker will definitely go to the ground and not be able to see and have a big problem breathing for several minutes. We spend several months a year in Mexico and have never had a problem. The reason for the question was not feeling a need to use it in Mexico but since it is in the wife's pocket I didn't want to have an issue when carrying it in Mexico.

Using wasp spray for self defense may be a crime, but sometimes yah just gotta grab whatever's available to save your a$$.

Why do Liberals insist and demand that achievers pay the way for nonachievers who are to lazy to succeed, or are just failures by their own choice?

Criminals prefer unarmed victims, dictators prefer unarmed subjects.

Why do ignorant people continue their blabbering when it only proves to others how stupid they are.

Cliffy........In my 21 years military (active & Reserves) and a total of 42 years combined civilian law enforcement, I was never once was issued wasp spray.........having said that..........

You will be in Mexico, and you will not "be tried by 12"......if you are concerned about your safety, and being "tried by 12", you might as well carry, legal or not.

My opinion is that wasp spray MAY be a diversion if you are on the inside squirting out, but if you let someone get within wasp spray, knife or machete range, they are too close and you lose.....

Whatever your weapon(s) of choice are, you need the ability, mindset and the training to make them work. Situational awareness is your best defense/weapon.

Good luck in your travels and I wish you and yours safe travels.

My LE Dept issued pepper spray. The only problem was that every time one of the Officers used it whoever was in the area also got the business, but to a lesser extent of what the main target received.

Yes I read the entire article (that doesn't mean that it is the only opinion, likewise, did you read the snoops link I sent?). Yes a I am quite familiar with Mace, pepper spray and all the permutations of same. Yes I am professionally trained in defensive handgun, personal hand to hand (to a lesser extent) combat, trained by and for several airlines in a/c defense.
Some people believe that nothing less than a 40 cal hand gun is enough but disregard all the fatalities from 22s. Some people won't go without an 18 round double stack mag with two extras, some go with one revolver, Some people can not own guns or pepper spray, one can't travel with pepper spray on the airlines (checked baggage maybe). Bear spray may not be readily available but wasp spray is. Having it in my eyes I can tell you your blind for a few minutes. Like I said, it may not be the best but if it is available use it.
Now, knowing that it has been said that bear spray is not a problem at the border, so be it, sure it could be the best in this situation. But that doesn't eliminate wasp spray from the equation. Use what's available. Up in the states it's a 9mm, down in Mexico (because I don't want any issues what so ever with either side of the border) I'll use wasp spray. Like I said, your mileage may vary, it's a personal choice.

Say Capt..........
I been using wasp spray "forever" ..I in fact wrote about the use of it, here at BN several years ago. Still recommend it highly.

Now.....these bears your speak of....I carry a "boat use" can of air horn. It'll do the trick unless you walked into her territory that harbors her cubs.....that's when you pray I suppose :-) The 395 corridor has plenty of bears...which is our playground as well as The Baja is. Effective use as we found out in Green Valley of the Bridgeport area.
